Illegal streaming: 24% of French people watch movies and series on pirate sites

The Hadopi, the High Authority for the dissemination of works and the protection of rights on the Internet, recorded an increase in French interest in illegal streaming in 2020. The study, published this Thursday, May 6, attributes this surge to successive confinements aimed at stemming the spread of Covid-19. During the first half of 2020, many French people confined to their homes turned to online content, causing a 20% increase in internet traffic .

Nearly nine out of ten Internet users (89% of those polled) claimed to watch series, films or documentaries online last April, against 81% a year earlier. “This increase in the consumption of online cultural goods has been accompanied by an increase in the number of visitors to illicit sites” assures Hadopi. Thus, 14.2 million Internet users visited pirate sites in March 2020 during the first confinement, or 27% of French people.

IS HADOPI OVERTAKEN BY ILLEGAL STREAMING?

As has been the case for several years, most Internet users are instead turning to illegal streaming . “Illicit live streaming […] in 2020 concentrates on average 2.4 million Internet users per month, ie 19% of Internet users” continues the High Authority. Streaming and direct downloading are the two most popular uses for hacking. 71% of hackers, or 9 million Internet users in France, took part in it every month in 2020.

However,  30% of French people use a video streaming service, whether Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney + . VOD services are also the big winners from containment, with a sharp increase in their number of subscribers around the world. The Hadopi thus attributes the success of illegal streaming to sports competitions broadcast online . “In December 2020, a quarter of illicit consumers (26%) used live streaming to illegally access, in particular, live sports content” notes the High Authority.

Between the lines, the Hadopi confirms not to be able to fight against Internet users who turn to illegal streaming. The High Authority, initially designed to fight peer to peer downloading, seems outdated for new pirating practices, including IPTV, illegal streaming which weighs 2 billion euros
