IPTV: justice orders Cloudflare to block two pirate sites

You may not be familiar with Cloudflare and yet it is one of the largest web companies in the world . It offers a content delivery network (CDN) service, understand a way for sites to reduce their page load times , across the globe. Its clients include companies such as IBM, L'Oréal and even Shopify. But the latter are not the only ones to use this device: given the popularity of the firm, many pirate sites also use Cloudflare to distribute their content.

Among them, we find in particular IPTV platforms , which have developed considerably in recent years. Indeed, according to a recent study, illegal streaming costs 2 billion euros in Europe and the United States. Enough to attract the wrath of rights holders, who demand accountability from justice. In 2020, Cloudflare was thus enlisted in two cases related to IPTV services, which resulted in the obligation to immediately block the “IPTV THE BEST” and “ENERGY IPTV” sites. The company appealed, but the final judgment, announced last Friday, stands in its positions .

CLOUDFLARE ORDERED TO BLOCK ILLEGAL IPTV SERVICES

Sanctions are starting to fall for these pirate streaming platforms. At the end of January, France also reacted by blocking 8 illegal sites for the first time . Cloudflare however attempted to explain that “IPTV THE BEST” and “ENERGY IPTV” will remain accessible and therefore active, as the company does not offer hosting services . An argument which did not convince the Italian justice which carried the two cases. “It is indeed confirmed that Cloudflare performs support and optimization operations at the affected sites, which improves the visibility and advertising of these illegal services,” said the lawyers.

The latter also specified that the blocking will be “dynamic” , that is to say that it will have to persist even if the accused services change their domain name or IP address . “I am happy to see justice take a stand,” said  Simona Lavagnini, lawyer for Italian rights holders. “This confirms that this kind of verdict applies to all actors involved in the distribution of illegal content on the web”.
