Michael B. Jordan just revealed that he's unlikely to return for the much anticipated Black Panther sequel. Despite the unfortunate passing of the late Chadwick Boseman, Marvel has decided that they are carrying on with a sequel to the hit 2018 film. Most of the stars from the first movie will be returning including Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Daniel Kaluuya (W'Kabi), Danai Gurira (Okoye), and Winston Duke (M'Baku). Director Ryan Coogler will also be returning.

Although many of Marvel's fan favorites will be coming back for Black Panther 2, one such character has been a mystery. Audiences will remember Jordan's charismatic turn as Erik Killmonger in the 2018 Black Panther film. His character challenged T'Challa for the throne and even tried to kill him. However, despite his efforts and a long epic third-act fight with T'Challa, Killmonger dies at the very end of the movie. The last shot viewers see of him is a wide shot of Killmonger kneeling beside T'Challa as he falls to the ground.

Since then, Killmonger quickly became one of the best and most talked about villains in the MCU. Given Marvel's track record of bringing characters back to life (a.k.a Loki) many were wondering if Killmonger would somehow make a return for Black Panther 2. According to Jordan, this is unlikely to happen. In an interview with SXM, Jordan talks about his possible appearance in Black Panther 2 after being asked on a scale of 1-10 how likely it would be for it to happen. He decided to give that chance a solid 2 meaning not likely at all.

“I didn’t want to go with zero, you know what I mean? And it’s like, you know, never say never, you know, I can’t predict the future. So I mean, it’s ‘Black Panther 2’. The two, I just figured two would be like, two sounds okay, I guess… All I know is that they’re developing a script that, you know, is a reflection of a lot of circumstances and tragedy that we had to deal with this past year.”

With Kilmonger gone, this creates the need for a new villain. There are very few known plot details so far but it was revealed that Mexico star Tenoch Huerta would be playing the villain role in Black Panther 2. Marvel has not confirmed what specific comic-book villain Huerta will be playing but fans have speculated everything from Kraven the Hunter to Doom or Narmor. Basically, no one knows, but if Coogler can get such an amazing performance out of Jordon for Black Panther, then he definitely can do the same for Huerta.

Black Panther 2 is going to be a tricky movie for Marvel to pull off. Not only were they already moving on to a new villain post-Jordan but now they have to tastefully address a horrible tragedy. Coogler admitted that writing the script for the film was a challenge. However, in the same interview with Jordan, he did say that he believes Coogler and Marvel will find a way to make a good movie and pay respects to Boseman at the same time. Regardless, Black Panther 2 will be released next year and it will be interesting to see how the film addresses these issues.
