Dungeons & Dragons Reboot Begins Filming

The Dungeons & Dragons reboot has begun filming. Based on the popular tabletop role-playing game of the same name, Dungeons & Dragons has been adapted several times before. This most recent big screen iteration has been in the works for quite some time, with Warner Bros. announcing the film in 2013. Eventually, Dungeons & Dragons was moved to Paramount where it once again lingered in development as the studio tried to crack a successful script that could accurately depict the game.

It was announced in December 2020 that Dungeons & Dragons cast Chris Pine in a lead role and it's only been uphill from there. A slew of big names have been revealed to be attached to the film, including Bridgerton breakout Regé Jean-Page, Fast & Furious franchise mainstay Michelle Rodriguez, and rising star Sophia Lillis. In addition, Hugh Grant is onboard as Dungeons & Dragons' villain and Justice Smith has been added in an undisclosed role. With casting underway, it seemed the reboot was finally getting off the ground and now it appears to have officially begun filming.

Director Jonathan Goldstein announced on Twitter that production had begun on the film. The tweet is accompanied by a picture of a clapboard with the Dungeons & Dragons logo across the top. John Francis Daley, Goldstein's co-director, is also listed on the clapboard. Goldstein kept the caption simple, announcing "The campaign begins."

The logo pictured on the clapboard is very similar to that of the original Dungeons & Dragons logo, quite possibly alluding to the faithfulness of the adaptation. As of now, it is unclear how Goldstein and Daley, who also penned the script, will adapt the game. Whether or not it incorporates the actual players of the game or if it stays firmly within the fantasy realm itself will be a huge question mark remaining over the film before more details emerge. There's plenty of Dungeons & Dragons elements that could transfer well onscreen, while some could be left to the wayside to make for a more streamlined product.

Still, what is clear about the upcoming reboot is that Paramount is banking on the adaptation. The Dungeons & Dragons cast is truly star-studded and there's no telling if more will be added as production continues. Just over a week ago, My Spy star Chloe Coleman was added to the cast. With a 2023 release date, it's entirely possible that the film will continue to flesh out its cast and with a little under two years until it hits theaters, Paramount has plenty of time to ensure they get Dungeons & Dragons just right.
