Internet users mobilize to save the pirate scientific platform Sci-Hub

Sci-Hub, the “Pirate Bay of Science”, is a platform that hosts thousands of content from the scientific community. Blocked in France and deemed illegal, the site is in the sights of Internet users who want to provide free access to these resources.

On May 7, Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan received an email from Apple telling her that the FBI had been monitoring her internet activities since… February 2019! The revelation comes months after Sci-Hub's Twitter account was blocked due to a complaint from science publisher Elsevier.

Reddit users on a mission to save the pirate platform

Sci-Hub has not been updated since December 2020, users of the social network Reddit have decided to save the pirate site by making 85 million scientific articles available in peer-to-peer.

To carry out this mission, the editors behind the initiative are counting on the participation and goodwill of a large number of Internet users. It will thus be a question of bringing in a few “datahoarders” (data hoarders ) but above all many seeders to ensure the availability of articles.

Ultimately, the goal is to design an open source version of Sci-Hub. It remains to be seen if the FBI will get involved .
