Glenn Close Wants To Play Cruella Again & Teases Story For A Sequel

Emma Stone will make her debut as Cruella de Vil this summer, but original Disney villainess Glenn Close wants to reprise her 101 Dalmatians role in a potential sequel, one that she already has an idea for. Stone's film, Cruella, will give a glimpse into the origins of the puppy obsessed fashion icon, but Close will forever be remembered for originating the live-action version of the character in the 1996 film. Close went on to reprise the role in 2000's 102 Dalmatians, the last time the iconic character was seen on the big screen in live-action.

The upcoming Cruella has drawn comparisons to Joker and although Stone has resisted those comparisons, it's clear that there are similarities. The prequel will lean heavily into the fashion of 1970s London, with Cruella as a burgeoning designer who runs into Emma Thompson's evil fashion house owner. Whether or not Stone's Cruella will be a hit remains to be seen and with the film premiering on Disney+ it will be hard to gauge its success, but Close is more than willing to swoop in and save the day.

A chance to see Close as Cruella again is undeniably enticing. No matter what film she's in, Close can turn out a stellar performance, as evidenced by her recent Oscar nomination for Netflix's Hillbilly Elegy, a film that was eviscerated by critics. Whether or not Disney takes her up on the idea remains to be seen, but the studio would be remiss to pass up on Close's offer. Of course, there's still Cruella to deal with.

Luckily, Stone looks more than capable of carrying the film, but Disney will likely gauge audience interest in the villain on whether or not that film is a critical and commercial success. While it looks to be an exciting addition to the Cruella mythology, no one does it like Close. The chance to see her prowl the streets of New York is one that shouldn't be disregarded and after her turn in 101 Dalmatians, it's clear that she's the perfect person for the role of Cruella.
