Leprechaun writer and director Mark Jones reveals details on an unmade vampire spinoff, Vamprechaun. The Leprechaun franchise consists of eight horror-comedy films, all centering on a murderous leprechaun named Lubdan. Portrayed by Warwick Davis in all but the last two of the films, Lubdan resorts to any means necessary to reclaim his gold when it’s stolen, even if that involves bloody murder.

The horror series received middling responses from fans and critics during its run. 1993’s Leprechaun was criticized for its acting and directing but has since gained recognition as a cult classic, boasting the debut performance of Friends alum Jennifer Aniston. Jones mainly worked on the first two Leprechaun installments before Lionsgate steered the series in a different direction during its prolific eight-film run.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Leprechaun creator Mark Jones discussed details for an unmade vampire spinoff. Jones’ screenplay opens with the tagline “short in stature…long in fang!” playing on the campy humor of the original Leprechaun films. The story begins in the distant past, with leprechauns forced underground to hide from vampires who kill the Irish folk characters for their powerful green blood. The leprechauns forge “magical blood-gold coins” to protect themselves, though a cunning vampire ultimately steals these.

You know, everybody’s into vampires, obviously Leprechaun is popular. Well…if a vampire bit a leprechaun, he would turn them into a ‘vamprechaun’.

The screenplay moves to the present day, where a leprechaun finds the blood-gold coins and reclaims them as his own before being bitten by a “vampire bat.” In an ensuing battle, the blood-gold coins are scattered across the city below, and the leprechaun changes into the titular cross-breed creature. Jones describes the vamprechaun as a "mixture of a classical leprechaun and Bela Lugosi, boasting pasty skin and slicked-back red hair.”  The rest of the proposed movie involves the vamprechaun searching for his missing coins in a "sleepy river town," where they have fallen into the hands of "our heroes: local rock-n-roller Emilio and his botanist girlfriend, Selene." Together, the two heroes run afoul of the "tiny terror."

Jones confirms that while potential producer partners have been attached, even proposing the Leprechaun spin-off be financed with crowdfunding, production on the film has never begun. Additional attempts at rebooting the franchise from low-budget independent producers have fallen short. As Jones explains, “We wanted it to be a theatrical, like the first couple of Leprechauns were, and you need a little more than that for something like this.” Jones also confirms that while Davis is “certainly not locked in and attached,” he would love a chance to reunite with the star.

Davis’ Leprechaun creation has entered the pantheon of iconic horror villains. However, with the latest installments of the Leprechaun series meeting continued negative responses, production of the vampire spin-off is uncertain. Fans will be eagerly anticipating to see if they’ll get the chance to binge this film on both Halloween and St Patrick’s Day.
