Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director, James Gunn, explains why the film's new 2023 release date already feels like it is cutting it close. Gunn shepherded the big screen debuts of the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 and turned the obscure comic book group into household names. The two Guardians of the Galaxy films were big hits for Marvel Studios, which is why the plan was for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to kick off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at first. That was before Gunn was fired and later rehired to direct the movie, but not before he decided to direct The Suicide Squad.

Instead of hitting theaters in May 2020, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is only now in the process of gearing up to start filming. Gunn has confirmed that cameras will be rolling on the movie by the end of 2021. Since Marvel Studios already had a full slate of movies announced through 2022, the company recently announced that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will release on May 5, 2023. This news has brought many fans great excitement with the film only two years away now. However, Gunn explains why he's already stressed about hitting that release date.

Once the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 release date was official, one fan asked Gunn on Twitter if it was stressful that the date was public. Gunn responded to say that he isn't stressed that the news is out, but he does feel some stress that the May 5, 2023 release is so close. Another fan later wondered how a release date two years from now could be considered close. Gunn once again replied and explained all the work being done to create new worlds, characters, sets, and action sequences. See the tweets below:

Guardians of the Galaxy 3's 2023 release date might seem far off for fans, but Gunn clearly does not hold the same opinion. He's currently working on HBO Max's Peacemaker show and will soon turn most of his attention towards his next MCU movie. Gunn is already prepping for the long-awaited production and has a lot on his plate. Still, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 should be ahead of the MCU's usual production schedule once filming begins this year. Instead of having roughly a year to complete the movie once production starts, Gunn could have more than 18 months to film the movie and finish post-production work before it is released.

Gunn's explanation for why Guardians of the Galaxy 3's release date already feels so close is understandable. It isn't confirmed which new characters are part of the dozens that will be introduced, but he's previously teased Adam Warlock, Quasar, and others could appear. Gunn previously said the movie will set up the next 10-20 years of cosmic MCU stories, so the new characters and worlds Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduces could be huge. And with the production set to utilize some of The Mandalorian's VFX technology, Gunn will have plenty of new toys to play with in what he says is his final movie in the franchise.
