Actor Michael B. Jordan reveals that his worst audition involved testing for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film, which served as the first chapter in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, debuted in 2015 to critical acclaim. Both viewers and critics praised the movie for its dynamic new cast of characters and heartfelt, exhilarating storylines. A certifiable blockbuster hit, the installment earned approximately $2.1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2015. In the following years, two more Star Wars movies in 2017 and 2019 rounded out the franchise.

During production for Force Awakens, a number of celebrity powerhouses, including Jordan, were considered for the iconic roles eventually played by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver. Michael Fassbender, Hugo Weaving, and Christoph Waltz were originally considered for the role of Kylo Ren during initial conceptions of his character as an older villainous figure. Notably, Eddie Redmayne also auditioned for the part, but, like Jordan, revealed that he “blew” it. As with any high-profile franchise, many well-known actors threw their hat into the ring for a chance to join such a prominent and substantial project.

While speaking to Variety, Jordan shared that he felt he botched his Star Wars audition. He went into detail about why he believes it went wrong. Read what Jordan said about what he thinks may have been his worst audition below:

I think that was probably my worst audition to date…I think it was I couldn’t wrap my brain around some of the sides because you know when you’re reading for these high-level projects, there’s never really any specificity in the sides. Everything’s like super vague; everything is in secret. Reading through, I just couldn’t connect it. I definitely bombed that one for sure.

Although Jordan did not join the intergalactic fight against the First Order, he acted in many other major films during this time, including the beloved Marvel film, Black Panther. In the 2018 juggernaut, Jordan played fan-favorite villain, Erik Killmonger. Fans applauded his complex, nuanced portrayal of an antagonist seeking both vengeance and retribution for racial oppression. Upon its release, the MCU movie became the highest-grossing solo superhero film of all time. It noticeably reshaped the Marvel landscape, with other projects referencing its thoughtful, carefully-crafted narrative as inspiration for their own story arcs.

While it certainly would have been exciting to witness Jordan’s take on a Star Wars character, he undoubtedly succeeded in his other cinematic roles. At the end of the day, film productions undergo multiple changes over the course of their lengthy periods of writing and shooting. Not only do the characters evolve, but so do the decisions for who, exactly, should play these same figures. If Jordan had joined Star Wars: The Force Awakens, perhaps he would have been unavailable for Black Panther. This, alone, would likely make both viewers and critics relieved that his audition for the space opera didn’t go as planned.
