The reboot of Saved by the Bell will include a special tribute to Dustin Diamond in season 2. Premiering on Peacock in November 2020, the reboot followed a new generation of students adjusting to life at Bayside High but also featured original cast members Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Mario Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, and Lark Voorhies.

Although he did not make an appearance, it was mentioned that Dustin Diamond’s Screech was on the International Space Station with a robot. There was an interest in having Diamond reprise the role in future seasons of the reboot and ideas were even mentioned about how the Saved by the Bell stalwart could potentially return. But, sadly, Diamond died of cancer in February of this year at the age of 44. In new remarks, Lopez promised that season 2 of the Peacock series would pay tribute to the actor.

During an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Lopez gave an update on season 2 of the Saved by the Bell reboot. He noted that the series would feature a tribute to Diamond, saying: “We’re planning something special we haven’t gotten into yet.” He also mentioned that the first table read for season 2 would happen soon and that filming would begin in June.

Lopez’s comments echo what Thiessen has said in the past. The actress mentioned that she would be surprised if the reboot didn’t include a tribute to Diamond. This speaks to how Diamond’s legacy is closely tied to the role of Screech. He is one of only two performers, along with Dennis Haskins as Mr. Belding, to be involved as a regular from the beginning of the original Saved by the Bell to its end. He appeared in Good Morning, Miss Bliss, continuing with the role until Saved by the Bell: The New Class. For fans of the franchise, and for those who grew up watching Diamond on screen, it’s good to know that the actor’s legacy and contributions will be remembered at his best.

It’s clearly important for the cast as well. While it’s true that Diamond published a tell-all book on his former co-stars, Lopez and others have been adamant that they carry no ill will towards Diamond for what transpired. For his part, Diamond apologized for the publication. In so many ways, a cameo by Screech in the new Saved by the Bell would have been cathartic and a chance to turn a new leaf. Hopefully, the planned tribute will serve as a reminder of the importance of reaching out and making amends while that’s still possible.
