The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard director Patrick Hughes has teased one of the new action sequences from the upcoming sequel. After forming an uneasy bond with the notorious hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) in the 2017 predecessor, Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) finds his path crossed again by Darius and his wife, Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek), who enlists his help to rescue Darius and stop Antonio Banderas' mobster villain. The ensemble cast for the film will also include Richard E. Grant, Frank Grillo, Morgan Freeman, and Tom Hopper.

Though looking to capitalize on the box office success of its predecessor, Lionsgate saw Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard run into a few speed bumps in both its production and road to release due to the global pandemic. While post-production was nearly complete when the quarantine was put into effect, the shutdown saw it slightly hampered as the crew had to work from home to finish the film up. On top of that, the film was initially delayed by a full year from its original August 2020 release date as theaters remained closed, though was bumped up by two months as vaccines rolled out and theatrical releases became more viable options for studios.

In an interview with Collider to discuss the action-comedy sequel, Hughes was asked about the set pieces audiences can expect in the film and which he's looking forward to most. Though keeping mum on exact details of the sequence, the director teased a pulse-pounding moment in which Jackson and Reynolds' characters are caught up in a speedboat chase. Read what Hughes had to say below:

"There's an action sequence where Ryan Reynolds recruits two mysterious figures Gary and Johann for a dangerous speedboat chase. That’s the one I am most excited for audiences to see. To say any more would spoil it."

Of the multiple action sequences teased in the first two trailers for the sequel, the speedboat chase does look like one of its biggest and most explosive. It would also mark the second time the filmmaker has taken his heroes to the water after Samuel L. Jackson's brief race through the canals of The Hague. Where that sequence saw Bryce on land and Darius on water, it should be interesting to see what chaos they can cause together out in the water, especially when paired with two law enforcement-type figures.

One of the biggest rules for sequels in the action genre is to always try and go bigger and bolder than what came before. With large boats exploding, cyberterrorists waging large-scale attacks on Europe, and the future of the Kincaid bloodline at risk, it's safe to say Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is certainly trying its best to clear the entertaining bar set by its predecessor. For now, audiences will have to wait until the film arrives in theaters on June 16 to see if it can live up to the original.
