Director James Gunn has confirmed that the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has already been finished. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie hit theaters in August 2014, with the second installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2  following along in May 2017. Both movies, headed by Gunn, were huge hits for the MCU. The rag-tag group of misfits redeeming themselves as the Guardians of the Galaxy made for a first film that had just the right amount of action, humor, great music, and emotion. The second movie doubled the laughs with the increased emphasis on the comedic side of Dave Bautista's character, Drax, and baby Groot captured the hearts of the MCU fan base, while Peter Quill's discovery of his father was the perfect follow-up for the questions raised in the first film.

Now, Gunn and the rest of the crew are gearing up for the third installment of the movie to premiere in May 2023. Originally, the movie was slated to release in 2020, but Gunn's firing (and subsequent rehiring) from the franchise, as well as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, led to the film's delay. Now, it will be released 6-years after the second movie premiered. While two more years of waiting may seem like a lifetime to Marvel fans, Gunn thinks Guardians of the Galaxy 3's release date is cutting it close. There are worlds to create, sets to build, takes to film, and, of course, awesome music to be chosen.

Gunn confirmed on Twitter that the soundtrack is already finished for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. A follower commented on one of his Tweets, and inquired if he had started the soundtrack for the movie yet. Gunn responded and revealed that, not only has he started the soundtrack, but he has already finished it, while shooting of the film is slated to begin at the end of the year. Check out Gunn's Tweet below:

Fans of the first movie will recall that the soundtrack was one of the highlights of the film. The soundtrack, dubbed Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1, features the songs on Quill's mixtape. It is a mixture of '60s and '70s hits that keep Quill grounded to Earth and embodies the memories of the mother he lost and the world he left behind. The tunes such as "Hooked on a Feeling," "I Want You Back," and "O-o-h Child," resonate with the viewers as well, fostering nostalgia for the past plus a feeling of connection and oneness with Quill. The soundtrack was the second best-selling soundtrack album in the US for 2014, right behind the soundtrack for Frozen, and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. When Guardians of the Galaxy 2 came around, it carried on the '60s and '70s groove of the first film, complimenting the movie beautifully and nabbing a certification of Gold from the RIAA.

The announcement that Gunn has finished the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, will have fans in anticipation of which hits will make it to the movie. What made the soundtrack of Guardians of the Galaxy so special was that it was something different. Very few movies put that much effort into the music and manage to so perfectly meld the script and soundtrack into one to propel the movie forward. Gunn's musical direction was certainly something of a masterpiece, charging the movie full of emotion, nostalgia, and cultural reference, which only intensifies the anticipation for the third movie and the 'awesome mix' that will accompany it.
