James Gunn doesn't want to direct a Thunderbolts movie after making Suicide Squad 2. Releasing this August, Gunn's take on DC's band of misfits is highly anticipated after David Ayer's 2017 version was widely disliked by fans and critics. Since all of Gunn's work on The Suicide Squad is finished, he has shifted to the subsequent Peacemaker series for HBO Max centered on John Cena's character who has been described as a "douchey Captain America.”

At the end of the year, Gunn will pivot back to the MCU for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, which is expected to be his last in the series, although he left the possibility of a fourth installment open. Other than that, it is unclear what Gunn's next feature film project will be. During an interview in 2014, Gunn expressed interest in a Thunderbolts movie, and with Phase 4 of the MCU introducing a plethora of new heroes, villains, and storylines, that is very much a real possibility. While many fans expected Falcon and The Winter Soldier to introduce the Thunderbolts since the villainous group was originally conceived by Baron Zemo, Marvel opted not to include them in the Disney+ series.

While it is still uncertain when or if the Thunderbolts will make their first appearance in the MCU, Gunn seems to have changed his mind since 2014. During a quick Instagram Q&A before heading out to shoot the Peacemaker series, Gunn was asked if he’s still interested in directing a Thunderbolts movie for Marvel. Gunn responded, saying that making The Suicide Squad “scratched that itch” for him. Check out a screenshot of the full interaction on Instagram below:

Very much like DC’s Suicide Squad, the Thunderbolts are a team of criminals and super-villains who are sent out on dangerous missions to eliminate deadly threats. As opposed to the Suicide Squad’s governmental leader in Amanda Waller, Marvel’s team is originally led by villain Baron Zemo, whose plan is to pose as superheroes for the sole purpose of gaining the public's trust. Nevertheless, there are many similarities between the two teams, and after directing The Suicide Squad, perhaps Gunn thinks they are too similar to still be interested in making a Thunderbolts movie.

While Marvel fans will likely be disappointed by Gunn’s response, it is probably for the best. Gunn plans to step away from the MCU after Guardians 3 and seek opportunities elsewhere, allowing Marvel to bring in some new talent with fresh ideas. While it is still a mystery if the Thunderbolts will get their own Marvel movie, don’t expect Gunn to helm the project.
