Edgar Wright's upcoming documentary, The Sparks Brothers, has received a trailer. Announced by Wright in 2018, The Sparks Brothers delves into the life and legend of cult American pop-rock duo, Sparks. As referenced by the title, Sparks is comprised of brother-bandmates, Ron and Russel Mael, who have released twenty-five albums together since 1971. Wright's first film since 2017's Baby Driver, The Sparks Brothers is also the director's first documentary feature.

Now, Focus Features has released the trailer for The Sparks Brothers. The kinetic teaser combines footage of Sparks' legendary live shows, vibrant animated sequences, and a host of other media to dizzying effect. Interviews with the Mael brothers are peppered throughout, as well as sit-downs with some of the many musicians that Sparks have influenced, including Beck, Duran Duran, and the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin. After premiering at Sundance in January, The Sparks Brothers boasts an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 43 reviews, suggesting Wright might have a promising future as a musical documentarian. But while the film is Wright's first foray into documentary filmmaking, it's far from his first project to feature music at its core. The protagonists Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World both find meaning in music, and all three films of Wright's Cornetto trilogy - Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End - are renowned for their expansive classic rock and Britpop-focused soundtracks. Though none of those entries into Wright's oeuvre feature music from Sparks, The Sparks Brothers should more than make up for those omissions when it arrives in theaters on June 18.
