Director James Gunn reveals that he receives daily threats online due to confirmation that an unspecified number of characters will die in the upcoming film, The Suicide Squad. A standalone sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, the film centers on the titular group of eccentric and dangerous criminals as they attempt to fulfill a series of life-threatening tasks for government director, Amanda Waller. Premiering this summer, The Suicide Squad follows the convicts as they journey to Corto Maltese to destroy a mysterious laboratory and prison. The film’s marketing tagline promises a ruthless and unpredictable expedition: “Don’t get too attached.”

While speaking about The Suicide Squad, Gunn has admitted that multiple beloved characters may, indeed, perish. A few familiar figures have returned from the prior installment, including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney). However, the updated ensemble cast promises to introduce other iconic characters from the comic books, such as Peacemaker (John Cena), Savant (Michael Rooker), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Bloodsport (Idris Elba). Although it is currently unknown who, exactly, will die during the bloody mission in Corto Maltese, theories have abounded online.

On Twitter, Gunn shared one of the violent threats he received on social media regarding the possible deaths of characters in the film. When a commenter commended the director for continuing to make popular films despite the likelihood of negative online attention, Gunn acknowledged that he tries to keep perspective about the overall situation. He noted that the majority of his messages are positive, while only a few are negative. He ended the thread by writing, “I try not to get bogged down in either & stay focused on what I love to do.” Check it out below:

At this time, Gunn’s candid disclosure that many members of the Suicide Squad will not make it to the end has certainly fanned the flames of anticipation for its premiere. Despite the daily threats he receives, Gunn remains active on Twitter, commenting cryptically on the film’s contents. When Screen Rant posted an article theorizing that seven villains would die, he tweeted, “This is overly optimistic to say the least.”

When it comes to press for The Suicide Squad, Gunn’s response certainly ensures a plot heavy with carnage, which is par for the course in light of the wild antics of the villainous group. Harley Quinn’s survival is one that has been hotly debated online, with many commenters arguing both for and against the likelihood of her demise. At the end of the day, this is a conversation that will only be resolved in the summer. Even then, who lives and who dies will likely spur its own hotbed of conflicts in the realm of social media
