Jason Momoa has confirmed that Aquaman 2 will begin shooting this summer. Momoa first rose to prominence in his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, but his debut as Arthur Curry in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice began a new era for the actor. Momoa reprised his role in the divisive 2017 film Justice League before starring in his first solo DCEU feature in 2018. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman became the most successful DCEU film thus far, going on to earn over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Right now, Aquaman 2 is shrouded in mystery. Alongside Momoa, Amber Heard is returning as Meera, as is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. It is assumed that Randall Park will also be returning as Dr. Stephen Shin thanks to his appearance in the post-credits scene of the first film that saw him team up with Black Manta. Willem Dafoe is also likely to return as Vulko. Whether or not Patrick Wilson's Ocean Master returns is unclear, but he is currently in an Atlantean prison, so it's possible he, too, could pop up, even if he is not expected to be the film's big bad.

Luckily, some of the mystery surrounding the film will soon be cleared up. Momoa confirmed on The Drew Barrymore Show that Aquaman 2 begins filming this July. The actor also revealed that he had a hand in writing the story for the upcoming sequel, pitching it to the studio immediately after the first film.

After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea. The best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David finished it off. And all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that, you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers. So that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming.

By all accounts, it sounds like the film is right on schedule. Heard revealed that she was training for Aquaman 2 back in April, indicating that shooting would be happening quite soon. With a release date currently set for December 2022, a summer shoot gives DC plenty of time to make sure the sequel goes off without a hitch. Seeing as WB has a lot riding on the film, this is a good sign. Aquaman may be one of the most promising solo arms of the DCEU alongside Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman films.

Now that the franchise is moving past Zack Snyder's Justice League and the SnyderVerse in general, they've begun looking to the future. This will not include Wan's horror spinoff The Trench, which was cancelled earlier this year, but the studio does have plenty in store for fans regardless. Aquaman 2 will be a big part of that future, setting the tone for Arthur Curry's role in the franchise going forward as one of the DCEU's major heroes.
