What Tom Hiddleston Loves Most About Playing Loki

Loki’s Tom Hiddleston divulges what he loves most about playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s God of Mischief. When Hiddleston originally auditioned for 2011’s Thor it was to play its titular character; however, Kevin Feige and director Kenneth Branagh thought his charisma, versatility, and perhaps lack of Chris Hemsworth's build, would lend better to Loki. Despite their initial confidence in the actor, no one could’ve predicted he’d go on to play the fan-favorite for over a decade.

Loki became the MCU’s big bad in 2012’s The Avengers, establishing Thor’s envious, yet charismatic, and empathetic adopted brother as one of the universe’s most memorable and intriguing villains. His resulting popularity is the reason Loki survived 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. The original plan was to have Loki die but test audiences refused to believe the trickster couldn’t cheat death at least once. After reprising his role in Thor: Ragnarok, Hiddleston’s seemingly redeemed character finally met his demise at the hand of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Hiddleston will play an alternate version of Loki in his first solo outing on Disney+ — something he’s just as passionate about as he was playing the character 11 years ago.

According to EW, Loki director Kate Herron organized a seminar, “Loki School,” so the creative team could learn about the character from Hiddleston, who talked in detail about his time in the MCU. During the process, Owen Wilson, who plays Mobius in the series, asked Hiddleston what he loves most about playing Loki. Read Hiddleston's response below:

I think it's because he has so much range. I remember saying this to him: On the 88 keys on the piano, he can play the twinkly light keys at the top. He can keep it witty and light, and he's the God of Mischief, but he can also go down to the other side and play the heavy keys. And he can play some really profound chords down there, which are about grief and betrayal and loss and heartbreak and jealousy and pride.

Hiddleston went on to express how grateful he is to be a part of the MCU, saying he feels a sense of responsibility to do his best playing Loki. For Hiddleston, the experience of revisiting a previous version of Loki is likely nostalgic, reminding him of the days he spent studying Loki’s history across Marvel Comics and mythology. The character Hiddleston plays in Loki is one who knows nothing of his arc beyond The Avengers and still feels he’s destined to rule...among other things. The show’s Loki escaped custody with the Tesseract during Avengers: Endgame’s time heist.

Loki will introduce the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization tasked with monitoring and protecting the flow of time. The TVA arrests Loki at the beginning of the series, wanting his help fixing all the mayhem he caused while on the run with the Tesseract. As Agent Mobius, a TVA analyst, Wilson’s character is meant to know everything about Loki. Like his banter with Thor, Loki’s relationship with Mobius should be a cornerstone of the series. We’ll likely see many sides of the already multifaceted Loki now that he's finally uncoupled from the God of Thunder. Regardless of what we see, one will ever know or love Loki more than Hiddleston.
