Warner Bros.' DC League of Super-Pets has begun building its cast as Dwayne Johnson has signed on to voice Krypto the Superdog for the animated film. Based on a variety of characters introduced throughout the DC Comics, the film will center on Superman's super-powered canine as he teams up with Streaky the Supercat to fight crime while the Man of Steel is on vacation. Though Krypto and Streaky have made live-action appearances in various TV shows, DC League of Super-Pets will mark their film debuts.

Development of the animated project was first announced in mid-2018 with The LEGO Batman Movie co-writer, Jared Stern, being tapped to write and co-direct the project. Sam Levine was tapped a year later to make his directorial debut as a co-director on the project, and a May 2022 release date was set, though word has remained mostly silent up until last year's DC FanDome when a brief teaser was shown for the project. The film will mark Johnson's second superhero and DC Comics effort alongside his in-production, Black Adam.

Nearly a year after the first teaser arrived at DC FanDome, Variety has brought word that Johnson has signed on to star in DC League of Super-Pets as Krypto the Superdog. The outlet also reports that the 49-year-old actor will produce the animated film via his Seven Bucks Productions label. Though no other cast members have been confirmed at this time, the studio is reportedly looking for more A-listers to voice the other characters of the film.

Across his 20-year film career, audiences have been jonesing for Johnson to finally make the jump to the world of superheroes given his large stature and charming personality. With Black Adam finally in production after nearly 15 years of development, the star will finally be able to make his live-action debut soon for the comic book genre. But given the film's story seems to center around Krypto and Streaky, a powerful voice is certainly needed for the the role of the Man of Steel's canine, and Johnson continues to prove to be one of the most iconic and booming in Hollywood.

Whether fans are nervous about the film or excited for it, Johnson attaching himself to DC League of Super-Pets as both an actor and a producer is certainly a vote of confidence for audiences. With even his worst films of late still proving to be entertaining, Johnson is certainly smart about what projects he chooses to tackle, especially after a few too many stinkers at the start of his career. Either way, next year is sure to be a good time for audiences as both the animated film and Black Adam are slated to arrive in theaters within a month of each other.
