A bank fails to protect the creator of a pirate IPTV website

Investigations against the operators of hacking portals and services often take months due to the complex process of obtaining the real identities of those behind them. In some cases it becomes impossible to identify them, despite trying by all possible means. Now, one of the last devices to identify a pirate has succeeded.

The anti-piracy group BREIN is one of the most active in the European Union. One of their main targets in recent years is portals offering pirated IPTV , and they are currently in an operation against the largest pirated IPTV portal in the Netherlands: GoFastIPTV.eu .

This portal is currently operational, offering 10,000 channels in HD and 4K quality with HEVC, in addition to 85,000 content on demand and the possibility of watching them on a delayed basis. The prices are quite affordable, costing 15 euros for 1 month, 30 euros for 3 months, 45 euros for 6 months, and 80 euros for a year .

PayPal and Rabobank, GoFastIPTV's means of payment

The problem is that the platform does not have the rights to broadcast these channels online, which is why BREIN is trying to identify the operator or operators of this service to force them to close the portal. To do this, they signed up for the service as if they were a normal user, and were told to send the money to a PayPal account or a Rabobank account in the Netherlands.

After that, they sent emails to PayPal and the entity to identify the owner, but they were unable to do so. They also tried to contact the web hosting services, who offered name, address and phone number, but it turned out to be from people who had nothing to do with the operation. They also failed to achieve anything using those methods with the IPTVGo.eu website , which is identical to GoFastIPTV and is supposedly run by the same operator. In that case, the trail ended at a hotel in Lisbon.

Therefore, BREIN decided to insist on the only way in which they were sure that they would receive the complete, and probably real, data: taking the bank to court . The account has been closed for some time, but even so the data can shed light on the real identity of the operator, with which the judges agreed. The fact that a copyright infringement is taking place is sufficient for that information to be obtained.

Rabobank will have to give them the user data

Rabobank stated that the GDPR prevents it from giving away personal data of its customers. In addition, the identity of the account may affect a third party who is placed as a front man and has nothing to do with the activity. However, BREIN argued that even if the identity was false, it would help them get closer to the manager. The judge accepted this argument.

Therefore, the court has ruled in favor of BREIN, giving Rabobank five days to provide BREIN with the details of the account owner , in addition to paying them € 1,775 for the cost of the trial. These types of resolutions demonstrate the dangers of pirated IPTV .
