Spawn Reboot Movie Script Takes Time To Get Right Says Producer

Jason Blum, the mastermind behind Blumhouse Productions, says the script for the in-development Spawn reboot is taking some time to get right. The reboot of Spawn has been in the works for years, but it finally gained some traction when Blum got on board in 2017. There are even big-name actors attached to star in the film, with Jamie Foxx said to be playing Spawn and Jeremy Renner as Detective Twitch. With all the stars aligning, it seemed like the Spawn reboot was finally ready to get off the ground. However, the film has found itself still stuck in development with very little in the way of updates.

Spawn is based on the comic book series of the same name, which Todd McFarlane created in 1992. It follows Al Simmons, a highly skilled assassin, who is murdered by his duplicitous partner only to end up in hell where he makes a deal with the devil, Malebolgia, to go back to Earth where he can see his wife and daughter again. Malebolgia grants Simmons immense power as one of his Hellspawn, and he is sent back to the living world with a fragmented memory and horribly burnt skin, making him unrecognizable. The success of the comic series saw it adapted into a film in 1997, which starred Martin Sheen, John Leguizamo, and Michael Jai White as Spawn. The film was poorly received by critics and audiences, only mustering up a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, and though it was able to double its budget in worldwide revenue, it stands as the only live-action Spawn film to date.

When talking about the upcoming film The Forever Purge with Comicbook, Blum was asked about the status of the Spawn reboot. Blum was quick to say that they were going to make it, but the script is taking a bit more time to perfect. Though his answer was vague on details, Blum's enthusiastic response should inspire confidence in eager audiences who want to see the antihero on the big screen again. Blum said:

"Oh, yeah, we're going to make it. We're going to make it. It takes a while to get the script right, but we'll make it."

Blum isn't the only one being adamant about seeing the film made, as McFarlane has been talking about the project for years. McFarlane has shared his vision for the film being a very dark, hard R-rated film. With the success of films like Deadpool and Logan, it goes to show that a darker, more mature comic book film can work, both with critics and audiences alike. The content and story within the Spawn comics already skews toward more mature audiences, which makes the PG-13 theatrical cut of the 1997 film a misstep. Still, Spawn has had success with a mature-rated animated series that ran on HBO from 1997 to 1999, where the character was voiced by Keith David. That series went on to win an Emmy in 1999 for Outstanding Animation Series.

McFarlane also wants to create a shared Spawn universe, much like what Marvel has with the MCU. A Sam & Twitch TV series in development will focus on the two detectives from the comic book series, which he hopes to tie into the film reboot. Though those plans are in the early stages, if successful, Spawn could become an entertainment powerhouse. As Blum and McFarlane continue to push the project forward, it's likely that more details will trickle out about the story and further casting. It's still unclear when the Spawn reboot will finally enter production, but fans can rest assured that great care is being taken with the property.
