The Alien TV Show Will Not Be A Ripley Story

Noah Hawley's upcoming Alien television show for FX won't be a Ripley story. Quite possibly one of the most iconic action heroes of all time, Sigourney Weaver's Ripley has faced off against the Xenomorphs and lived to tell the tale numerous times. Although the franchise has moved away from the character in recent years, with films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant telling the story of other ill-fated crews, Weaver's impact on the franchise is undeniable. In both Prometheus and Covenant, Ripley is a clear inspiration for Noomi Rapace's Elizabeth Shaw and Katherine Waterston's Daniels, respectively.

Now, Hawley is set to continue the franchise with his upcoming series on FX. The Alien show will be set on earth, a significant departure for the series. Other plot details are being kept under wraps and no casting announcements have yet to be made. It is known, however, that original director Ridley Scott will be involved in the series in some capacity. Hawley has brought some of FX's most critically acclaimed series to the channel, including the Fargo anthology series and Legion, the X-Men adjacent series that ran for three seasons on the network.

Like his previous series, Hawley is going in a new direction for his Alien show. The producer told VF that the series will not be about Ripley. Hawley revealed that he feels as if the character's story has already been told "pretty perfectly." He also went on to reveal his reasonings behind setting the story on earth, saying that the location will allow for a more expansive story that will stand in contrast to the more "trapped" Alien tales told earlier in the franchise.

It's not a Ripley story. She's one of the great characters of all time, and I think the story has been told pretty perfectly, and I don't want to mess with it. It's a story that's set on Earth also. The alien stories are always trapped… Trapped in a prison, trapped in a space ship. I thought it would be interesting to open it up a little bit so that the stakes of "What happens if you can't contain it?" are more immediate.

Ripley not returning shouldn't come as a surprise - to many, the story of the Nostromo's warrant officer has long been complete. Although Neil Blomkamp planned to bring Weaver back as Ripley for Alien 5, those plans fell through and Scott continued on with his own efforts to reinvent the franchise. Unfortunately, both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant left audiences feeling as if something was lacking and it seems like now is the perfect time for another reinvention. With Hawley at the helm, too, things are looking promising.

The multi-hyphenate took what seemed like a crazy concept - rebooting the Coen Brothers' Fargo movie into an anthology series - and turned it into a critically acclaimed television series. Similarly, Legion was an out-of-this-world take on X-Men lore that was praised for its narrative and aesthetic risk-taking. With Alien, the possibilities are truly endless and the franchise seems primed for a reinvention in this vein. Although it would be a treat for longtime fans to see Weaver return as Ripley, it's just as exciting to see a fresh, new take on the long-running franchise.
