Empire Magazine reveals a slate of new magazine covers putting a spotlight on the roster of supervillains in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. David Ayer first introduced the villain-turned-antihero team to the DC Extended Universe with 2016's Suicide Squad, which earned generally negative reviews from critics and a mixed response from fans. But thanks to its box office success and positive reception to Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn, Warner Bros. continued development on multiple follow-ups to the film, though took their time to ensure they learned from the mistakes of its predecessor.

After exploring the indie world, Gunn made his blockbuster directorial debut as the helmer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Prior to getting to conclude his trilogy, Gunn was fired by Disney and Marvel Studios after controversial old tweets resurfaced and WB wasted no time scooping him up, hiring him just three days after and letting him choose which project to take. Moving at a lightning pace in writing and shooting the film, as well as creating, writing, and directing its spin-off Peacemaker, the time is drawing nearer for the Suicide Squad to return.

With just over a month to go until the film arrives, Gunn took to Twitter to reveal Empire's magazine covers for the DCEU standalone sequel. The multiple covers offer a spotlight on the roster of supervillains seen in the film, including a glimpse at the mammoth Starro.

Since the first footage and early posters for the film arrived at last year's DC FanDome, there have been plenty of exciting looks at the crew at the heart of The Suicide Squad's story and the new set of magazine covers are certainly no different. Though some of the characters look clearly ripped from their individual character posters, it should prove exciting to see the group in the jungle setting of Corto Maltese for the film. While it could be chalked up to a simple light reflection, it is interesting to see one of Captain Boomerang's eponymous bladed weapons shining so bright, begging the question of whether it is a glowing effect or indicative of a new take on his gear.

The black-and-white cover for The Suicide Squad is easily the most exciting of the bunch. Not only does it feature James Gunn donning what appears to be a shirt with Michael Rooker's Savant, but it also seems to point towards the importance of Peter Capaldi's The Thinker in the story and is drawn by none other than DC's Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee. The wait is almost over as the film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6.
