Witcher 3 Upgrade Will Look Better Than Even Old Trailers, CDPR Teases

In a WitcherCon panel, CD Projekt Red developers hinted that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's current-gen upgrades will feature far superior graphics compared to what fans have previously seen in older trailers. CD Projekt Red originally announced the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrades in late 2020, teasing a range of technical improvements that include ray tracing and faster loading times.

Apart from confirming a late 2021 release window, CDPR has shared few other details about the eagerly-anticipated upgrades in the months since the initial announcement. Yet, smaller bits of information have surfaced piecemeal. For example, it's possible the development studio will enlist the help of The Witcher 3's PC modding community to further flesh out the planned technical enhancements. At the time of writing, though, it remains unclear as to whether or not mods will play a part in the final product.

What does seem apparent, however, is CD Projekt Red's insistence that The Witcher 3's current-gen upgrades boast vastly improved visuals. The developers hinted as much during a WitcherCon panel (via Netflix) while watching a snippet from The Witcher's 10th-anniversary video. As this brief segment came to a close, one developer noted that a lot of work has gone into improving textures. "We have much better textures nowadays," he remarked, before another chimed by asking, "so, this is shit," while pointing to the anniversary trailer. This seems to serve as a tease that visuals in The Witcher 3 will look far superior compared to the in-engine footage on display in the aforementioned video.

Despite Cyberpunk 2077's myriad shortcomings, its visuals are quite the sight to behold when firing at all cylinders. If anything, the sci-fi RPG serves as proof that REDengine, CDPR's proprietary game engine, has received stunning iterations. Reason suggests The Witcher 3's current-gen upgrades will benefit mightily when all is said and done.

To the dismay of many a fan, a firm due date for the upgrades in question remain under lock and key. However, WitcherCon did reveal that new DLC inspired by Netflix's hit Witcher series will come packaged with the much-coveted next-gen versions of CD Projekt Red's seminal action-RPG.
