Bong Joon-ho says the upcoming Parasite series “will be something of great genius,” or at least, he hopes. Written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, Parasite follows a poor family who infiltrates a wealthy one by swindling their way into their employment. The film premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it made history as the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or. Parasite went on to make history again at the 92nd Academy Awards as the first foreign language film to win Best Picture.

Considering its critical and commercial success, it’s not a surprise that Parasite will be continued in some way. In January of 2020, HBO announced that a Parasite series was in development with Bong as executive producer, along with The Big Short and Vice director, Adam McKay, who serves as an EP on another HBO series, Succession. A few months back, McKay confirmed the series will not be a remake, but an original story set within the same universe. Now, the Parasite maestro himself is revealing some more details about the upcoming series.

Two years after his film won the festival’s top prize, the South Korean auteur returned to Cannes, where he fielded some questions on HBO’s upcoming Parasite series. Per IndieWire, Bong says it will be a “black comedy,” confirming he is giving input to the project as a producer and is “working in close cooperation with screenwriter McKay.” Bong sounded incredibly optimistic about the series he and McKay are crafting. Read what Bong said below:

[The television series] will be something of great genius, I hope. I worked with Adam McKay and he’s figuring out the scenario. We’re going to do it in the United States.

When HBO’s Parasite series was originally announced, many feared it would merely be an Americanization of Bong’s masterpiece. Hollywood adaptations of foreign language films do not usually fare well, but with Bong acting as a creative consultant, the series seems to have his approval, and beyond that, his praise. Now that its two head honchos have spoken, many will wonder when the show’s cast will start coming together.

Early rumors indicated Mark Ruffalo was being eyed for a lead role, but there has been no official word yet on that front. With two big names in Hollywood acting as producers, the Parasite series is likely to attract some A-list actors as well. Bong and McKay seem like a match made in heaven, given the latter's newly found propendency for social commentary. As class divides only seem to have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is perhaps no better time for the two to collaborate on a Parasite spinoff.
