Marvel Head Won't Rule Out Possible Venom & Spider-Man MCU Crossover

Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, won't rule out a crossover between Venom and the MCU Spider-Man just yet. Spider-Man: Far From Home was the last film in Marvel Phase 3 and the Infinity Saga, as well as the last MCU film before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the entire Phase 4 slate was pushed back a whole year. Now Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to open in theaters in December 2021 and will not only be released after three other Marvel Studios films but also after Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Sony and Marvel Studios co-produce the Spider-Man films set within the MCU. However, Marvel Studios has no direct creative control over the spin-off films Sony is developing based on Spider-Man characters like Venom, Morbius, or Kraven the Hunter, leaving their relationship to the Spider-Man films as a major question for audiences. The Venom film removes Spider-Man from the character's origin and the film featured no overt references to the wider Spider-Man mythology, but the teaser trailer for Morbius featured Michael Keaton, who played Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. the Vulture in the MCU Spider-Man films. Given that Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage were originally set to open in 2020 (a whole year before the third MCU Spider-Man film), it indicated that a crossover was being set up that is now out of sync.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Kevin Feige addressed the rumored possibility about Venom crossing over with MCU's Spider-Man. While he didn't give a definitive yes or no, he did comment on how it is always a possibility, as his years at Marvel Studios have shown him nothing is absolute (as even a few short years ago the idea of Spider-Man in the MCU seemed impossible). He did comment on the online speculation, saying that rumors have a hit-and-miss shot of being right on whatever Marvel has planned. Read what Feige said below:

I obviously don't want to talk about rumors or speculation on what could happen or what couldn't happen as it relates to any characters Marvel Studios hasn't brought to the screen yet. But I will say what I've always said, having been at Marvel for 20 years I wouldn't dismiss anything, I wouldn't rule anything out. When and how and where remains to be seen. It could be, you know any rumor you read online could happen anytime between now and never.

Given the popularity of the character Venom, and the fact that his first solo film grossed $856.1 million dollars worldwide, the eventual crossover between Venom and Spider-Man would certainly draw audiences in as an event film, similar to Spider-Man's introduction into the MCU with Captain America: Civil War. While Disney and Sony need to negotiate which Spider-Man characters can be used in Disney properties, Sony is free to use any character. It means that Venom may not be able to show up in another MCU film, but Spider-Man could always appear in one of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters' films.

Venom's relationship to the MCU is left to be seen, but with the introduction of the multiverse in projects like Loki and the expansion of the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as well as in Spider-Man: No Way Home, that could provide a simple explanation for how Venom could face off against Tom Holland's Spider-Man. With incarnations of Doc Ock and Electro from past Spider-Man films set to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, another foe from a universe without Spider-Man would make for a crowd-pleasing reveal and help boost up the roster for an incarnation of the Sinister Six. Sony Pictures has made sure to keep Venom: Let There Be Carnage on the release schedule before Spider-Man: No Way Home, meaning that Venom and Spider-Man may be crossing over sometime soon.
