Margot Robbie opens up about her uncertainty about returning to the DC Extended Universe as Harley Quinn after James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Robbie first made her debut as the character, created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for Batman: The Animated Series, in David Ayer's 2016 DCEU effort Suicide Squad. The Australian actress's performance as the on-and-off lover/partner to the Joker was one of the few praise areas for the film. It led to the development of multiple projects for her to appear in, including the well-received Birds of Prey.

Robbie is currently gearing up for her return as Harley in The Suicide Squad, Gunn's soft-reboot/follow-up to Ayer's film that will see Quinn and multiple other criminals from Task Force X assigned to take down a Nazi-era prison in the South American island of Corto Maltese. Harley is one of the few team members from the first film to carry over into the follow-up alongside Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis' maniacal leader Amanda Waller. After a few release delays due to the ongoing pandemic, The Suicide Squad is finally right around the corner, with Gunn even revealing it had been moved up by a day.

Robbie spoke with Entertainment Weekly for her return as Harley in Gunn's The Suicide Squad in anticipation of the film's release. In looking at her potential future in the DCEU, the Oscar nominee revealed she's currently uncertain when she will return and expressed a desire to take a hiatus from the part for a time. See what Robbie had to say below:

"It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds... and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she's exhausting. I don't know when we're next going to see her. I'm just as intrigued as everyone else is."

While Ayer's Suicide Squad was undoubtedly a messy effort, Robbie proved to be one of the best-cast performers in the DCEU, and Birds of Prey continued this winning streak for the star. Though development on follow-ups to Ayer's film with numerous Quinn appearances has taken a slower approach than initially intended, Robbie has certainly put a lot of work into her time as the antiheroine over the past five years. Given the deranged mental nature of Quinn and the large-scale action on display in the films, it's understandable Robbie has become a bit exhausted from consecutive portrayals of the character.

Despite this desire for a break, it should be noted that Robbie didn't state she would be retiring from the role of Harley Quinn and that she was intrigued to see what comes next for her in the DCEU. As Gunn has said, he was given carte blanche to kill whomever he wanted in The Suicide Squad; the possibility is there for Quinn to reach the end of her road in the film. With fans' craving for more of her take on the character, only time will tell what comes next for Robbie's Harley in the DCEU future.
