Jennifer Carpenter will return as Debra Morgan in the much-awaited revival of Dexter. The ten-episode reboot will feature the return of Michael C. Hall as the beloved title character, and will take place ten years after the series finale in 2013. Clyde Phillips has been brought back as the showrunner to the revival after departing the original series at the end of season 4. The reboot will bring a slew of fresh new faces, including Clancy Brown as the major villain, Kurt Caldwell, an unofficial mayor of Iron Lake in upstate New York, where Dexter is now residing. Joining him will be Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, Michael Cyril Creighton, Jack Alcott, and Jamie Chung.

Carpenter has played Dexter's adoptive sister and the foul-mouthed detective, Debra Morgan for all eight seasons of the original series. Over the course of the show, Debra is promoted to lieutenant and has a strong relationship with her brother before catching him in the act of killing in the season six finale. Since then, Dexter and Debra have had an up-and-down relationship in which Debra has compromised her morals as a person and a police lieutenant to keep her brother's secret. Carpenter has received much acclaim for her portrayal as Debra,  especially in the final two seasons.

THR has now brought word that Carpenter will be reprising her character of Debra Morgan in the anticipated reboot of Dexter. The series ended in Debra's abrupt and tragic demise with Dexter taking her off of life support after being shot and being left in a vegetative state. Riddled with guilt, Dexter left behind his son with his girlfriend and disappeared into a hurricane, faking his death and resurfacing as a lumberjack in Oregon. With the death of Debra, it is most certain that she will appear in the series as a ghost to Dexter or a flashback. Since Dexter, Carpenter has led two drama series with Limitless and The Enemy Within.

Carpenter's return comes after the news of John Lithgow returning for a cameo appearance as the also-deceased Arthur Mitchell aka Trinity Killer on season 4 of Dexter. The show has recently been very coy about potentially seeing some old cast members from Dexter's original run. In the revival, Dexter will be living in a significantly different area and will be operating under a new name, but it is clear that he will always carry the past with him.

While the return of Dexter will feature an entirely different atmosphere and tone, it is evident that there will be many callbacks from the earlier seasons and Dexter's old life. With the premiere of the revival approaching closer, there will certainly be more information about the Dexter revival and perhaps viewers may possibly see some familiar faces from Dexter's days working for the Miami Metro Homicide Department. It has not been revealed how many episodes Carpenter will appear in the revival, but it will be exciting to see the return of Debra when Dexter premieres on Showtime sometime in the fall.
