Gunpowder Milkshake 2 is a possibility, according to the film’s director, Navot Papushado. Before Gunpowder Milkshake debuted simultaneously on Netflix and in theaters on July 14, it was reported that a follow-up was already in development at StudioCanal, suggesting that the production company has high hopes for the Karen Gillan-led film. Early reactions have generated a considerable amount of hype, leading many to believe that Gunpowder Milkshake has the potential to be a franchise starter.

With a script from Papushado and Ehud Lavski, both of whom are making their English-language debuts, Gunpowder Milkshake follows a young hitwoman named Sam (Gillan) who must team up with her estranged mother Scarlet, played by Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey. Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Carla Gugino round out the cast as members of the sisterhood, a group of female assassins who are pitted against a shadowy organization known as The Firm. Though, the film’s main conflict revolves around an 8-year-girl, Emily (Chloe Coleman), who gets caught up in the middle of the gang war.

Gunpowder Milkshake introduces the ruthless crime syndicate known as The Firm, but much of their backstory remains unexplored, leaving the door open to follow-ups or other spinoffs. In an interview with Comicbook’s Patrick Cavanaugh, director, Navot Papushado, says he has plenty of ideas for a sequel, but he wants to gauge audience reactions to the film before committing to anything. Read a portion of the interview below:

My entire focus is on making sure people see it and love it and are passionate about it. Even when you write something that's such an incredible scene but there's no room for it, instead of forcing it, you're like, 'Okay, let's put it in the back pocket.' Then when you start working on [a follow-up], you have so many ideas. Even when you decide there's no room for it here, you're like, 'Okay, let's keep it aside.' Actually, if people are going to like it as much as I hope they will, there are screens and theaters and wherever they can see it, I think there's enough ideas already to put things in motion.

Papushado doesn’t seem against the idea of a sequel at all, although he didn’t seem ready to commit quite yet. Gunpowder Milkshake's highly stylized and hyper-violent action has drawn plenty of comparisons to John Wick, along with its underground world of assassins. The Keanu Reeves-led film not only got a sequel, but has proved to be a tremendously successful franchise, also making films like Atomic Blonde and Nobody possible.

With a fourth Wick installment on the way, it’s not unlikely that Gunpowder Milkshake could follow in its footsteps. Its ending does not directly set up a sequel, but there are still numerous paths a follow-up could take, such as future conflicts between the sisterhood and The Firm or Sam seeking further revenge against those who killed her father. Gunpowder Milkshake introduces an intricate mythology that could easily be expanded upon in later installments.
