The Suicide Squad Named A Rat After Chris Pratt

Writer/director James Gunn said that one of the live rats used in The Suicide Squad was named after Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt. Gunn and Pratt previously worked together on the ensemble films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite the fact that Gunn was initially fired from working in the MCU over old posts on social media, the pair will be working together once again on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is expected to hit theaters on May 5, 2023.

Until then, Gunn has been busy working on another ensemble film, but this time for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). As both the writer and director of The Suicide Squad, the film follows a group of villains who are forced to team up under the name Task Force X. After being taken to an island called Corto Maltese, they must complete their mission if they hope to survive. One member of the squad is named Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), who is able to control rodents. While Gunn is continuing to work with comic adaptations, this time it's going to get much more violent, given the R-rating.

In an interview with EW, Gunn explained what it was like working with live rats. While there were quite a few rodents running around on set, there were two main rats that they worked with. One of them goes by the name of Jaws, while the other is a play on actor Chris Pratt's name, Crisp Ratt. This could be perceived as an insult towards the actor, although Gunn assured that Pratt appreciated the joke. See below for Gunn's full statement:

"We had a lot of rats that we worked with. A couple dozen, I guess. But we had two primary rats. One was named Jaws and one was named Crisp Ratt. [Laughs] They were our two main rats, and they were sweethearts, and they played Sebastian for most of the movie. Crisp could do some things and Jaws could do some other things. Jaws was the more mellow one. Whenever you needed a rat to just sit on Daniela's shoulder, or to be held by her, or whatever, that's almost always Jaws. And when you needed a more crazy rat that was drinking water or running across the room, that would be Crisp Ratt.

"I had to text Chris the other day to be like, 'We're putting the credits together and one of our rats is named Crisp Ratt. This of course is meant as a compliment to you. But I just want to make sure that you're cool with that, that I put this rat's name in the credits.' He thought it was hilarious."

Pratt himself won't be starring in the film, but this is a fun little connection between the MCU and the DCEU films. It's fairly common when working with animals to use more than one for different scenes, especially when considering the animals' different temperaments. For example, 2019's Pet Sematary used four different Maine Coons to pull off Church. However, similar to how Jaws and Crisp Ratt were the two main rats, Leo, who has since unfortunately passed away, is most recognized for his appearance on the poster. With Gunn's comment, now we'll know which rat we're looking at on screen based on what the rat is doing in a given scene.

Gunn has previously explained how The Suicide Squad is the most fun movie that he's made so far. Judging by the trailers, the film certainly goes full "balls to the wall"  in ways that are more reminiscent of Gunn's earlier career with titles such as Super. With characters including the Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher 2, it's clear that this isn't going to be your typical superpower film. Audiences will have to wait until August 6 to find out just how crazy the ensemble film will get.
