Colin Farrell reveals the extent of the Penguin’s role in The Batman movie. The upcoming film from director Matt Reeves marks a new era for the Caped Crusader on screen as Robert Pattinson will be the latest actor to don the cape and cowl. Reeves’ adaptation will reportedly be set on the DCEU’s Earth-2 and therefore bear no relation to Ben Affleck’s Batman who is reprising his portrayal of the character in another upcoming DCEU film, The Flash.

Along with Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, The Batman stars Andy Serkis as his loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth, Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. The film’s villains include Paul Dano as the Riddler and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. The first look at these characters came in a trailer that premiered at last year’s DC FanDome, and fans were shocked at how unrecognizable Farrell was behind his Penguin makeup and costume. Now, the actor is sharing some details about the adversary’s role in the film.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Colin Farrell talked to host Josh Horowitz about the extent of his role in the upcoming Batman movie. The actor revealed he’s only in the film for “five or six scenes” for a total of about nine minutes of screentime. He joked that he’s excited to see the finished film because “it won't be ruined” by his presence. Read Farrell’s full quote from the podcast below:

I'm only in it for five or six scenes, so I can't wait to see the film because it won't be ruined by my presence. It's a freebie for me, I get a little bit uncomfortable for the f***ing nine minutes I have and the rest I cannot wait to see how he brought this world to life. Because the sets were extraordinary, the production design was extraordinary, and his use of music and sound will be extraordinary. And as you said you said the cast, all them from Robert to Zoe.

Farrell has delivered some solid performances in recent years, including in comedies like In Bruges and Horrible Bosses. He's also excelled in indie films like Yorgos Lanthimos' The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. His upcoming portrayal of the iconic Batman villain will be one of his most high-profile roles to date. One would be hard-pressed to claim with serious conviction that his presence would ruin the film, as Farrell seems to be self-deprecating for the sake of humor.

Based on his comments above, it seems like the Riddler will play the role of the primary antagonist, which is why DC seems to be saving the first look at Dano sans mask for later. Farrell’s character, on the other hand, also known as Oswald Cobblepot, will play the role of a secondary villain. This echoes past cinematic adaptations of Batman from Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, and Christopher Nolan, which often pitted Batman against more than one villain. It has been said that a superhero movie is only as good as its villains, and Matt Reeves’ The Batman seems to be on the right track in that regard.
