COD: Warzone Bans Another 50,000 Accounts As Cheat Frustrations Mount

As an increasing amount of cheaters appear in Call of Duty: Warzone, developer Raven Software recently implemented ban waves which removed over 50,000 accounts from the game. The battle royale installment in the iconic first-person shooter franchise was launched back in March 2020. Since then developers have worked to maintain the game through updates, events and moderation.

Since its launch more than one year ago, Call of Duty: Warzone has become increasingly plagued by hackers and cheaters. The game's creators have attempted to fight back against these players, however; the developers recently turned their attention to software that uses machine learning to cheat at Warzone and other games. A bold YouTube video was recently used to advertise this advanced piece of cheating software, which reportedly uses machine learning technology and is compatible with consoles. The cheat supposedly allows the user's weapons to automatically target and hit enemy players, making the cheater virtually unstoppable in-game. Fortunately Call of Duty publisher Activision caught wind of the cheat's public advertisement, and the company took steps to have the ad removed from YouTube. Unfortunately there are still countless sources of cheats and hacks throughout the internet, and many of these sources seem to grow bolder and bolder. One Warzone cheat site is supposedly having a free trial weekend, which will no doubt flood the game with hackers.

On Twitter Raven Software has announced that two recent ban waves have resulted in the ban of over 50,000 Call of Duty: Warzone accounts. The bans reportedly targeted "repeat offenders," likely referring to accounts which have been known to cheat continuously, but Raven also confirmed that other targets have been successfully banned from the game. It remains to be seen whether this significant amount of bans will have a noticeable effect on the game's community.

Along with intentionally creating an unfair advantage for certain players, hacking can also cause unintended side-effects which ruin other players' experiences. Popular Call of Duty: Warzone streamer NICKMERCS recently encountered a glitch which bumped him to Level 1000 and granted him rare Dark Matter gun skins. The glitch was apparently caused by NICKMERCS killing a hacker during a match. The hacker's death somehow caused their cheat to be transferred over to NICKMERCS, leading to him instantly leveling up and unlocking weapon skins.

As a free-to-play installment in a hugely popular series, Call of Duty: Warzone attracts a massive and diverse player base. While many of these fans enjoy playing the game, there are bound to be some who hack and manipulate the title's systems for an easy advantage. While ban waves are a decent way to remove huge swaths of cheaters, it is also possible that some innocent gamers will be caught in the net. Time will tell how the online Warzone community continues to evolve.
