Spike Lee accidentally first announced Titane as the winner of the 2021 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival awards show. The festival was founded in 1946 and is considered to be one of the biggest film festivals in the world, alongside Venice Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival. Since 1959, it has been more than just a festival, but also a marketplace for sellers and buyer across the film industry. The festival shows a wide variety of films, including F9 as the mystery blockbuster this year. The Palme d'Or is the top prize of the Cannes Film Festival and is considered to be one of the most reputable awards in the world of film.

The award was first created in 1955, but was known as the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film previously. The award was replaced by the Grand Prix before being brought back in 1975. The first film to win the award under the title of the Palme d'Or was 1955's Marty, which would go on to also win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Cannes Film Festival includes a jury panel of highly distinguished contributors to the arts are led by a jury president. In the 2021 festival, Lee marks the first Black jury president with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mélanie Laurent, Song Kang-ho, Tahar Rahim, Mati Diop, Jessica Hausner, Kleber Mendonça Filho and Mylène Farmer acting as jury members.

Variety reported from the Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony, where the honors are announced. With Lee being the jury president, he was the one to introduce the award-winners. However, he accidentally first announced Titane as the Palme d'Or winner. Canal+ posted a tweet with a video that captures the moment. Jury member Laurent instantly tries to stop him from reading the awards as people are immediately frazzled by the mistake. See below for the full video:

Titane is a French-Belgian drama written and directed by Julia Ducournau (Raw), making her the second female director to ever be awarded the Palme d'Or. The film follows a serial killer who hides her gender behind the face of a young boy who has been missing for 10 years. Lee is the filmmaker behind titles such as Do the Right Thing, BlacKkKlansman, and most recently, Da 5 Bloods. Laurent, who tries to stop Lee from reading the Palme d'Or winner, as she starred in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds as Shosanna, the theater owner.

This isn't the first time that a big awards mess-up caused a lot of commotion - just look at the 89th Academy Awards in 2017. With Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presenting the award for Best Picture, an error resulted in La La Land being announced as the winner, despite the fact that Moonlight actually won. Lee's mistake certainly created an odd atmosphere at the awards ceremony of one of the biggest film festivals in the world. Nevertheless, it makes for a funny moment for viewers to watch and the creative team behind Titane was still in tears as Lee officially announced the award later that evening.
