Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson calls out her Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star Mark Ruffalo for not getting a matching tattoo with the rest of the Avengers cast. Both actors have been figureheads of the MCU since they first co-starred together in 2012's The Avengers. While the film was Johansson's second film playing Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the MCU since joining in 2010's Iron Man 2, it was Ruffalo's first foray into he franchise after replacing Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk who left the franchise after starring in the Hulk's solo film back in 2008.

The pair have appeared together in all four Avengers movies and were even paired together for a controversial romance in Age of Ultron. While Black Widow is Johansson's final film in the MCU, after Natasha heroically sacrificed herself in Endgame to help Hawkeye recover the Soul Stone from Vormir, Ruffalo looks set to stick around a while longer. He will be reprising his role as Hulk in upcoming She-Hulk series on Disney+ that is set for release in 2022, with Tatiana Maslany as Banner's cousin Jennifer Walters.

Johansson's chiding of Ruffalo came about during her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers while promoting her long-awaited solo movie. Johansson explained that after working together for close to ten years, the main Avengers ensemble -also consisting of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Jeremy Renner- decided to get matching Avengers themed tattoos to commemorate the last time the six would work together. The only member of the cast that didn't want to take part was "Ruffalo because he’s lame" according to Johansson . She went on to explain that the group considered different options to get him on board, but the actor remained strongly opposed to it. You can read Johansson's full statement below:

"We have an Avengers tattoo. The only person who doesn’t have it is Mark Ruffalo because he’s lame, basically. We tried to get him to do it. We said ‘What if we do it with like white ink? What if we did it in water and we could have the experience of all doing it together?’ He just shut it down, it was not a thing. He’s such a party pooper."

It's unclear why Ruffalo would choose not get a tattoo alongside the co-stars that he had worked so closely with over the past decade, however he has previously stated that he is afraid of needles so that was likely a significant factor. Johansson's comments are clearly meant in jest however, with good-natured ribbing being a huge part of the behind-the-scenes culture in the MCU - one need only look at the hilarious feud between Anthony Mackie and Tom Holland.

It's not the first time an ensemble cast have opted to get matching tattoos with one member refusing to. After The Lord of the Rings trilogy finished filming, the primary cast -including Ian McKellan, Orlando Bloom, and Viggo Mortensen- all had the Elven word for 'nine' tattooed on themselves with John Rhys-Davies refusing to take part. Still, Ruffalo's decision not to take part in the group activity doesn't detract from both his and Johansson's involvement in a highly iconic movie franchise. Likewise, it doesn't detract from the close friendship between the co-stars that developed over the years which will likely endure long after the actors have left the MCU.

Black Widow is out now in theaters and on Disney+
