John Cena made a stunning return to the WWE at the company’s Money in the Bank event. For over a decade, Cena was the WWE’s biggest superstar, and he even crossed over into the mainstream with a rap album and various movie ventures. He holds the joint record of 16 world titles and headlined the biggest money match in WWE history with fellow wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson at WrestleMania 28. However, since 2016, Cena’s WWE appearances have been more sporadic due to his ever-increasing acting commitments. The former WWE Champion stars in the latest Fast & Furious (F9), as well as the upcoming The Suicide Squad, and he recently wrapped his Suicide Squad spin-off show Peacemaker. However, despite his busy schedule, the rumors of a return to wrestling have never stopped.

As WWE were gearing up for the return of live crowds and with arguably their second-biggest pay-per-view, SummerSlam, in August, the wrestling rumor mill swirled that Cena would be making his return to set up an epic showdown against Universal Champion Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. Cena himself fuelled the speculation, assuring fans it was a question of when, not if, he would return to WWE, as he stated he had not had his last match and that he could not wait to have his “next one.” WWE fans have not been able to see The Suicide Squad star since his cinematic match against The Fiend at WrestleMania last year. However, now, the wait is over.

Last night’s Money in the Bank PPV, WWE’s first PPV with a full capacity crowd since March of 2020, closed with Reigns defeating Edge to retain his Universal Championship. In the storyline, Edge had been positioned as Reigns' last top-tier challenge, and after winning, Reigns grabbed the microphone to say that the whole world could acknowledge him. However, as seen in WWE’s post on Twitter, the Champion was then interrupted by a returning Cena, who made his long-awaited return to a thunderous ovation from the Texas crowd.

Instead of acknowledging Reigns, the returning Cena delivered his trademark “You Can’t See Me” hand gesture before playing to the crowd to bring the PPV to a close. The WWE legend even addressed the live crowd after the show went off-air, claiming this is not a one-night return, but it’s his first night back. The return not only effectively set up a blockbuster match for WWE’s SummerSlam show, an event they reportedly plan to stack with big money matches, but it provided the company with a memorable moment that reemphasizes the importance of a live crowd on the company’s first PPV back with an arena full of fans.

The now expected SummerSlam main event will be only the second match between Cena and Reigns, but only this time, instead of Reigns trying to establish himself as the top star, he’s now firmly cemented his place at the top, doing some of the best work of his career. Wrestling fans will no doubt be excited for what the two superstars will have in store for them moving forward. It will be interesting to see how long Cena is back in WWE, and despite making his return, he’ll more than likely have some time put aside to promote The Suicide Squad, which hits theatres and HBO Max before SummerSlam. Regardless of how long he’s back for, though, judging by Texas’ reaction, wrestling fans are clearly ecstatic about Cena’s WWE return.
