Walker Hayes' 'Fancy Like' Might Bring This Item Back to the Applebee's Menu

Before Walker Hayes and his 15-year old daughter created a TikTok sensation with their fun, quirky dance to his infectious song “Fancy Like,” from the Monument artist’s new EP Country Stuff, fans were already familiar with the country singer’s charming videos featuring Lela and, often, his other five kids.

“This year was an odd one and I think like everybody, we all tried some new things just to kill some time,” he tells Billboard. “TikTok for me, honestly, it's just a bonding mechanism for me and my daughter and we dove in heavy over COVID. She was into those dances and I was like, 'I have nothing better to do than learn them with you.' I love to dance. My wife and I met in high school, and I can't lie when I say I was that guy on the dance floor -- and she was always that girlfriend kind of looking at me like, 'You're crazy.'”

Hayes’ smooth moves are paying off for him now, though. “Fancy Like” marks Hayes’ second Hot 100 entry, so far reaching a No. 20 high and surpassing his previous entry, 2018’s "You Broke Up With Me," which peaked at No. 62. The song also becomes Hayes' first No. 1 on Hot Country Songs this week -- he of course responded with a new dance video -- and previously reached No. 1 on Country Digital Song Sales.

You're 41 and having the biggest hit of your career. Would you have been prepared for this success earlier?

It's great timing for sure, as far as where my heart is and the life I've lived up until now. I'm also at a place where I can see how fleeting [success] is. I'll be quite frank -- I don't want to be sad about success, but I still miss my dad [who died in March]. I still struggle each day. I'm six years sober and I know I'm five minutes from blowing that up. I'm not the greatest dad in the world. I would like to be. But every night I feel like I go to bed going, "I could do this better.”

When I was 21 or 31, I might have thought that [success] would change something. Maybe I would look in the mirror and say, "Man, I really like that person. I see now they've finally proved themselves to me." Now I know that's not what happens when you succeed. Success sometimes can magnify some of those issues that we all deal with and pains and struggles that we have.
