A new piece of DC Extended Universe fan art imagines Zachary Levi's Shazam and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam preparing for a fight. Originally named Captain Marvel and created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck, Shazam is the superhero alter ego of young boy Billy Batson, who transforms into the hero by speaking the magic word "Shazam!" from the wizard of the same name who imbued him with his abilities. Having also gotten his powers from the magician, Black Adam was the ancient Egyptian predecessor to Shazam and would frequently act as an archenemy to the hero before eventually becoming a corrupted antihero.

Development on a Shazam! live-action film first began at New Line Cinema in the early 2000s with Dwayne Johnson in talks to portray Black Adam as the villain, though after New Line was absorbed into Warner Bros., development was put into limbo as the studio began working on its DCEU. Slowly starting back up with Johnson in talks for Shazam or Black Adam in 2014, the studio eventually elected to split the characters into separate solo films with Levi starring as the hero while Johnson would lead the antihero's movie, which was put on the backburner in favor of Shazam!. After a few years of developing Black Adam with multiple rewrites and directors, production finally got underway in April and concluded last week, while the Shazam! sequel Fury of the Gods is currently shooting.

On the heels of filming finally wrapping on the long-gestating project, artist Ultraraw26 took to Instagram to share a new piece of fan art for Black Adam. The art sees The Rock's titular antihero facing off against Levi's DCEU iteration of Shazam for an epic battle, utilizing a set photo Johnson recently shared on his own Instagram.

Though the creative team is taking the antihero approach for Johnson's Black Adam, the door isn't closed for he and Levi's Shazam to face off in the future of the DCEU. Given the first Shazam! established Adam as a villainous character in the magical world, the hero could very well take his return in Black Adam as a sign of needing to fight him. Plus, with his superhero family now assembled after the events of Shazam!, Levi's hero would not be alone in taking on the powerful ancient being.

However, looking at the past of the DCEU with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and even outside of it to other WB fare like Godzilla vs. Kong, the likelihood of Shazam and Black Adam being at odds for a whole movie seems fairly low. Should such a story come to be, chances are the two will end up putting aside their differences in favor of fighting a greater evil, though hopefully whomever ends up writing that narrative handles it better than the DCEU's second installment. In the meantime, fans will have to anxiously wait for Black Adam to arrive in theaters next July or for first footage and images to drop at this year's DC FanDome.
