Black Widow's David Harbour Really Did Get Stuck In Red Guardian Suit

Kevin Feige reveals David Harbour got stuck in his Red Guardian costume during Black Widow filming. In the movie, Alexei/Red Guardian is presented as the USSR's answer to Captain America with a similar uniform, shield, and level of propaganda produced around his existence - complete with action figures and catchphrases. The character's presence also further ties into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's revelation that multiple super soldiers based on Steve Rogers were created after his presumed death during the Second World War. However, Red Guardian's accomplishments are certainly considered dubious at best.

In Black Widow, Alexei was sent on a covert mission to the United States during the 90s alongside his pseudo-family of Rachel Weisz's Melina and a young Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova, played as adults by Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, as his wife and daughters. After completing his mission and narrowly escaping capture by S.H.I.E.L.D. in the process, Alexei returns to Russia only to be locked in a gulag for serving as a potential risk to Ray Winstone's Dreykov. Twenty years later, he is liberated by Natasha and Yelena and goes on to don the mantle of Red Guardian once more and aid his 'daughters' in their mission to destroy the Red Room.

While taking over Marvel Studios' Twitter account for the Black Widow watch party, Feige revealed several pieces of interesting trivia, including Harbour's wardrobe mishap. The incident occurred while filming the scene where Harbour's character is getting changed into his Red Guardian suit for the first time after escaping the gulag. The scene sees the trio seek out Weisz's Melina for help in locating the Red Room. Alexei quickly leaves the group and heads for Melina's cramped bathroom before setting about desperately trying to fit into his suit. In a moment of life imitating art, Harbour genuinely "got stuck inside the suit and had to call for help to get out" with that take even making it into the movie. You can read the full Tweet below:

Considering that Alexei is presented as being vastly out of shape after two decades in the gulag, the Red Guardian costume for the scene was deliberately designed to be tight-fitting. As such, it was surely inevitable that such an incident would take place and must have been embarrassing for Harbour. The scene in question, alongside the reaction of several characters to Alexei's weight gain throughout the film, has brought some criticism towards both Black Widow and Marvel. It continued the uncomfortable running joke that began with Fat Thor in Endgame, which perpetuated the view that superheroes had to match a particular body type. The fact that Marvel was so committed to the joke that an actor got stuck in his costume doesn't necessarily bode well either.

Still, Alexei's commitment to regain his past and be the hero that he believes himself to be, even if others don't, while also protecting his daughters, makes him commendable nonetheless. There's no guarantee that Harbour will return to the MCU, but both he and Feige have expressed interest in having him return. With Pugh set to take over the role of Black Widow now that Johansson has left the franchise, it would certainly make sense for Red Guardian to make an appearance alongside Pugh in a Black Widow sequel, potentially with other members of Winter's Guard, Russia's answer to The Avengers. Hopefully, by that time, there won't be any similar costuming mishaps.
