The Suicide Squad director, James Gunn, shares his biggest regret about Harley Quinn while shooting the movie. The upcoming DC film is a standalone sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which premiered in 2016. Upon its release, the initial movie received a slate of negative reviews from critics, who disparaged the lackluster storytelling and half-baked characters. At the same time, many reviewers and fans spotlighted Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn as a notable highlight. Moreover, despite the heavy criticism directed at the film, Ayer’s Suicide Squad was a box office hit. As a result, a sequel was eventually greenlit for production and Gunn joined the project in 2018.

The original Suicide Squad introduced the titular group of supervillains and followed the group as they worked to fulfill their first mission for ruthless government director Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). During their dangerous journey, the eccentric foes find themselves bonding over their shared desires for a liberated future. In Gunn’s new film, a number of fresh antiheroes join the roster and threaten to violently shake up the outcome of the gang’s next mission in Corto Maltese. Along with Robbie and Davis, the ensemble cast includes Idris Elba, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, John Cena, Michael Rooker, and Sylvester Stallone.

While on Jimmy Kimmel Live with cast members Robbie and Cena, Gunn revealed a regret he still had about a pivotal moment featuring Harley Quinn. Admitting to his mistake, the director explained that he was so impressed by Robbie’s acting that he forgot to pay closer attention to the scene itself. Read what Gunn said below:

"The hardest thing I asked her to do was something I never thought she would be able to do…There's a scene in which Margot is being hung up by handcuffs over her head and she has to get her toes along a dead body and pick a key off of the dead body, flip her toes backwards to put the key into the lock over her head, unlock it, and then come down, straight. And she is like a human Swiss army knife [and] was able to flip herself backwards to do this. And I'm watching this it was honestly my favorite — torturing Margot was my favorite day — watching the scene with her flipping backwards was just beyond incredible, and I was so happy that it worked and I was mesmerized by it. And then I got into the editing room with the footage, and you have this little cuff next to your ear, on your outfit that covers her face so it looks like it's a stunt person doing it in the movie, and it's my biggest regret all movie is that with the scissors. I was so mesmerized that you're doing it I wasn't looking."

The Suicide Squad remains a hotly anticipated DCEU installment for fans of the franchise. Robbie’s Quinn last graced the screen in the 2020 solo film Birds of Prey, which focused on the supervillain’s attempt to build a new life for herself after breaking up with the Joker. Along the way, she befriends a group of women with their own dangerous pasts, all of whom work together to defeat a crime lord called Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor). The movie garnered positive reviews from critics, who applauded the quirky and unexpected action as well as Robbie’s characterization of the beloved Harley Quinn.

Considering Robbie’s commitment to fleshing out Harley’s narrative in greater detail, The Suicide Squad will likely showcase the character in exciting and inventive ways. It certainly seems that the actress has impressed Gunn with her unwavering devotion to the role, as well as her savvy ability to fully embody the character. While Gunn might have some regrets about a specific scene, it is very likely that Harley Quinn will shine onscreen regardless of a few movie-making mistakes along the way.
