A number of senior Borderlands 3 developers have left Gearbox to create a new indie game together. Gearbox is currently working on the upcoming Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, which is expected to release in early 2022.

Borderlands 3 released to high praise in 2019 and has gone on to receive additional DLC expansions since its launch. The series is renowned for its extensive loot system, which has become something of a landmark in the loot-driven RPG genre. The universe will continue to grow with the release of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a follow-up to the Borderlands 2 DLC Assault on Dragon Keep, which will feature a distinct fantasy flavor instead of sci-fi. Borderlands 3 now has crossplay functionality, though not on PlayStation.

Multiple key figures behind the development of Borderlands 3 have now left Gearbox. As reported by Axios, senior producer Christopher Brock, art director Scott Kester, and lead mission designer Keith Schuler have departed the studio after more than a decade of working there. Borderlands 3 creative director Paul Sage, lead character artist Kevin Penrod, and UX/Game Feel director Chris Strasz have also left, with a total of seven senior departures at the development studio within a two-week period. According to an unnamed Axios source, the developers will begin work on a new independent project together.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a totally isolated Borderlands spinoff, may be the biggest known game that Gearbox is currently developing, but the departure of many of the senior Borderlands 3 team has revealed that Gearbox is planning another project. According to founder Randy Pitchford, the group was part of an unannounced pre-production team, working on something else entirely. While no other details were disclosed, Pitchford did comment that their departure won't cause disruption to the unnamed project's development.

Unfortunately, no details are known about the new indie venture from the former Gearbox developers. Other than the game being an independent project, nothing has been confirmed, leaving the door wide open for speculation. The team of seven have unparalleled experience in the looter-shooter genre, and have been developing sci-fi worlds for a long time. This could suggest something similar is on the cards, though it's possible the group will want to embrace something entirely different to the Borderlands series.

With Tiny Tina's Wonderlands coming soon, an unannounced project in pre-development at Gearbox, and a new title from an incredibly experienced team of developers, there's a lot for Borderlands fans to look forward to. In addition to the video games, the Borderlands movie, directed by Eli Roth, is expected to release sometime in 2022.
