Masters Of The Universe: Revelation Review-Bombed By He-Man Fans

Fans of He-Man have review-bombed Masters of the Universe: Revelation less than a day after its release. A continuation of the original series from the 1980s, Masters of the Universe: Revelation comes from the mind of cult filmmaker Kevin Smith that brings in an all-star cast to voice the iconic characters. Smith and his writer's room were given the task of making a series that would please fans of the original series, who now have grown up, and be accessible to new fans and new kids who have never heard of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

When the series was first announced, the general reaction was excitement given Smith's credentials and history being attached and associated with geek-friendly properties. However, after an interview where Smith explained the title and that it would be Teela's story, a certain subset of fans began to turn on the series as they saw it as sidestepping He-Man before the series even aired. Critical reaction to the series itself was extremely positive, with Smith noting it has been the best reviews he has gotten of his career since Clerks.

However, as some may have anticipated, some fans review-bombed Masters of the Universe: Revelation in less than 24 hours after it premiered on Netflix. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently has a 25% fan reaction, which is a sharp contrast to the critical reaction which is 94%. It is worth noting that there is no idea of how many of the profiles reporting negative reviews were created specifically to log in reviews for Masters of the Universes: Revelation.

This marks a repeated trend in pop culture that has popped up quite a bit lately. From Ghostbusters to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, when a new addition to a long-established property decides to increase the role of a character of a different gender or change the race of a character, a subset of fandom takes this as a slight or attack against them. The flames are then fanned by outside parties, typically with the aims of pushing a political agenda that sees a sense of change as negative. A 2018 study showed that nearly half of The Last Jedi's negative reviews were political trolling.

However, despite some segments of fans wanting to write the narrative as the series is a failure, the final result tends to favor the changes. Captain Marvel was review-bombed before it was released due to Brie Larson's casting, and despite the best efforts of those to change the narrative Captain Marvel went on to gross $1 billion worldwide. The Masters of the Universe brand faced a similar backlash, as an older group of fans attacked She-Ra and the Princesses of Power online, but the series forged its own path and found a new loyal set of fans that allows the material to remain relevant. Masters of the Universe: Revelation success will be determined not in a single day, but over time, and if it draws in a new generation of fans, then the show will have succeeded.
