M. Night Shyamalan's Old is projected to beat Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins in their opening weekends at the box office. Ever since COVID-19 shut down theaters in early 2020, it has been a long and difficult process for movies to become box office hits again. Tenet was one of the rare 2020 movie releases to try and get people back into cinemas, but that proved to be more difficult than expected with various pandemic restrictions. 2021 has been better, though, with a few films performing well all things considered.

The summer is traditionally where movie studios drop their biggest blockbusters and see these major titles draw in hundreds of millions of dollars in a single weekend. But, strong opening weekends have still been tough to come by domestically. A Quiet Place Part II, F9, and Black Widow are the only movies to open above $45 million, and only thirteen movies in all have cracked double-digit opening weekends. M. Night Shyamalan's Old and Paramount's Snake Eyes reboot are the latest high profile summer releases to arrive, but it is the former that is slated to win the weekend.

Box office numbers shared by THR project Old, M. Night Shyamalan's latest twist-filled original story, to narrowly edge out Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Old is on track to earn $16M in its opening weekend, with Snake Eyes falling behind with a $14.2M projected opening. Black Widow is expected to earn another $11M to finish third while Space Jam: A New Legacy is looking at a 65 to 70 percent drop in its second weekend. If these results hold, it will be the seventh time M. Night Shyamalan's movie has opened to the top spot at the box office.

Prior to the pandemic, it would have been even more interesting to see how Old and Snake Eyes would fare if they faced off like this. Shyamalan's movies routinely open fairly strong, with Old's estimated $16M opening the lowest of his career. Meanwhile, Paramount's previous two G.I. Joe movies both opened to more than $40M. The movies theoretically serve different audiences, so both could've succeeded under normal circumstances. However, Old is still in a good position to turn a profit with its small budget, while Snake Eyes will need to make up significant ground overseas for Paramount to feel good about making more movies in this new franchise.

The opening weekends of Old and Snake Eyes, as well as the legs for Black Widow and Space Jam 2, are the latest reminders that the box office still has a long way to go before it is truly "back." Strong opening weekends by a small number of films shouldn't overshadow everything else. Now it will be worth keeping an eye on how Old  and Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins continue to perform after these modest openings, especially with Jungle Cruise, The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, and more competition on the way.
