Electronic Arts' upcoming Dead Space remake could feature content cut from the original, as well as additional features from other games in the series. Dead Space is one of the most renowned horror franchises in gaming, and news of a Dead Space remake of the first game has taken the world by storm.

The Dead Space series has remained dormant for some time, with the last numbered game, Dead Space 3, releasing in 2013. Fans have been clamoring for a new game or remake for many years, and rumors of a new addition to the franchise have been rife all year. During July's EA Play Live event, a revival of the beloved series was finally announced with a teaser trailer. The game will be a full remake of the 2008 original, this time taking advantage of new-gen hardware and PCs. The new Dead Space will feature no loading screens, as well as new and improved graphics.

Speaking with IGN, the creative director of the Dead Space remake, Roman Campos-Oriola, has teased the game could feature never-before-seen content. According to the developer, the team has access to all the original game assets and not just the final product, allowing them to bring to life the original vision without being hampered by the technological restraints of the time. Campos-Oriola told the publication:

“We started with the original level design of the original Dead Space. What's funny is that you can see some of the iterations that were made prior to ship by the team. In the first chapter, you can see some corridors that they wanted to do first in a certain way, and then you can understand why they changed it for technical constraints or [some other reason]."

Accessibility is also something important to the team, and the developers are looking to open up the world of Dead Space to allow more players to experience it than ever. Noting the many advances in accessibility since the release of the original, Campos-Oriola also stated the remake will have more playability options, including "different ways to play the game if you need it." Improvements seen in the later games in the series are likely to make an appearance in the remake to aid its accessibility. Senior producer Philippe Ducharme also told the publication that the remake will include more links and references to the wider Dead Space canon, which could include nods to Dead Space 2 and 3.

The Dead Space remake will be helmed by a different studio than the original. The 2008 title was created by the now-closed Visceral Games, with the IP being handed to EA Motive. EA Motive is perhaps best known as the studio behind Star Wars: Squadrons, which is a far cry from the survival horror series. Despite some concern from fans, EA Motive's plans to expand and enhance the first Dead Space game sound impressive, and it's hoped the game will go above and beyond the Dead Space experience players are expecting.

EA has yet to reveal gameplay or the release date for the remake, but the company has confirmed it's coming to new-gen consoles in PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, as well as PC. The specs mean the game can target a higher framerate and provide smoother gameplay, offering what could be the most realistic and terrifying Dead Space experience yet. While it's not clear when the game will launch, it's hoped the title will take full advantage of new hardware.
