Resident Evil Branded Perfumes Release In Japan

The developer of Resident Evil, Capcom, released a Japan-exclusive perfume collection inspired by some of the game's central characters. The perfume collection is one of several gestures to commemorate Resident Evil's 25th anniversary, which Capcom began celebrating this past May.

The Resident Evil franchise has experienced a handful of developments since its 25th birthday on March 22. The main series' eighth installment, Resident Evil Village sold 3 million copies just four days after its release in May, raking in nearly $180 million in sales. At E3 in June, Capcom announced that a Resident Evil Village DLC was in the works due to popular demand and critical acclaim, and also confirmed that its Resident Evil Re:Verse online multiplayer game will come out that following July (although, it has since been reported that Resident Evil Re:Verse will release in 2022).

Some game developers celebrate franchise anniversaries with conventional merchandise like shirts, bags, or hats. Naughty Dog did this to commemorate The Last of Us Part II's one-year anniversary. Capcom decided to go a different route for Resident Evil's 25th anniversary and opted for a three-part perfume collection aptly named "The Biohazard 25th Anniversary Mini Perfume Collection" (via GamesRadar). Each of the three scents is inspired by Resident Evil characters Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and Jill Valentine. It's unclear if the perfumes will be faithful imitations of these characters' real scents - which might be an odd choice given they spend their days arduously fighting against biological warfare and other threats.

The bottle's label is designed to look like each Resident Evil character's respective department in the game: Redfield's is shaped like the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance emblem, Kennedy's is shaped like the Raccoon City Police Department badge, and Valentine's is shaped like the Special Tactics and Rescue Service logo. An individual bottle retails for ¥6380, which is roughly $60, and will be available both online and in-stores. However, those who are curious to buy them won't be able to unless they reside in Japan.

Releasing a collection of scents inspired by a popular franchise is one way of ringing in an anniversary, and it is certainly a memorable approach. The mere fact that such a niche form of merchandise exists is, perhaps, a testament to the demand for Resident Evil goods. And even if those based outside Japan won't be able to get their hands on these bottles of perfume, they can still look forward to the upcoming Resident Evil Re:Verse, Resident Evil Village DLC, and other upcoming releases.
