Don Mancini, the creator of the Child's Play franchise, reveals that his Chucky TV show is heavily inspired by Child's Play 2. After the success of Tom Holland's original film in 1988, Universal took over the franchise to produce Child's Play 2 in 1990. While not originally as well-received as the original, Child's Play 2 has since become a fan favorite. The movie picks up after the events of the first film, with Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) living in a foster home and Chucky being revived after the Play Pals Corporation's factory experiences a power surge.

Chucky is one of the most iconic killer dolls of the horror genre. However, the franchise has gone through quite a few changes over the years. Child's Play 3 is considered the black sheep of the series, with Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky then delving into the more vulgar and raunchy side of the series. Even though Curse of Chucky was the beginning of the franchise seeing direct-to-video releases, it was considered a return to form, introducing new intriguing characters in a soft reboot. Cult of Chucky then continued the same tone and story as its predecessor, following Nica Pierce's (Fiona Dourif) story as she is admitted to an insane asylum.

During the Chucky panel for Comic-Con International, Mancini briefly discussed how his TV show connects to Child's Play 2. Fiona Dourif confirmed Chucky picks up after the events of Cult of Chucky, but tonally, Mancini revealed the series was inspired by Child's Play 2. When describing his series, Mancini explained, "I made it my mission to steer the franchise back to the tone of Childs Play 2."

One obvious way Chucky is connecting to Child's Play 2 is by bringing back Christine Elise, who played Andy's foster sister in the first sequel. Elise was last seen in the post-credits scene of Cult of Chucky getting ready to torture the original Chucky doll. During the Legacy of Chucky panel at Comic-Con@Home, Elise spoke about how seeing a child and a teenager go against Chucky was an interesting dynamic; the movie saw Andy and Kyle try to survive without the help of any adults. Mancini later touched upon this, explaining that Chucky is reverting back to having children and teenagers as the main characters.

The first seven Child's Play movies tie together, and seeing Vincent, Elise, and Jennifer Tilly in recent films has been a huge selling point for the franchise. The first trailer for Chucky may not have featured any of the veteran cast members, but Mancini has proved with the last two Child's Play movies that it's possible to blend classic elements from the original films with a new story and set of characters. Even though there are a lot of questions surrounding the new series, it should be reassuring that Mancini is looking back at what originally made the franchise a hit.
