Nathalie Emmanuel reveals how her character fits into Army of the Dead’s heist. Following Zack Snyder’s stint with the DCEU, the director pivoted to Netflix to develop several projects for the streamer, the first of which was Army of the Dead. The zombie-heist film premiered in May and cracked the top 10 most-watched titles on Netflix with 75 million views. Starring Dave Bautista at its lead, Army of the Dead follows a group of mercenaries tasked with venturing into an undead-infested Las Vegas to attempt a fatal heist.

Once it became clear early on that the film would be a hit, Snyder began developing two prequel projects for Netflix, one of them being an animated series and the other a live-action feature titled Army of Thieves. The film will see the return of Matthias Schweighöfer, whose eccentric safecracker Ludwig Dieter was a standout in Army of the Dead. Schweighöfer also directs the film, which will introduce an entirely new heist team, including his character and new ones played by Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, and Guz Khan.

Netflix recently unveiled the first teaser trailer for Army of Thieves during Comic-Con@Home, which was accompanied by a virtual panel with Schweighöfer, Emmanuel, and the film’s producers Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller. During the discussion, Emmanuel was asked about the role of her character, Gwendoline, who helped Ludwig develop his safecracking skills in the prequel film and instigated his journey, which later unfolded in Army of the Dead. Read what Emmanuel had to say about Gwendoline below:

I guess [Gwendoline] is kind of head operations of a team of people that all have specific skills and they are internationally wanted for their shenanigans and they lose their safecracker and now she’s got to find another one.

Nathalie Emmanuel first broke onto the scene in HBO's Game of Thrones as Daenerys Targaryen’s sidekick named Missandei. She also stars in the Fast & Furious movies as Ramsey. Her next role will be as Gwendoline in the aforementioned Army of the Dead prequel film. Piggybacking on her comments above, the recently released teaser trailer for Army of Thieves shows Gwendoline recruiting Ludwig for a top-secret heist during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse.

Emmanuel appears to play a prominent role in Ludwig Dieter’s origin story, and perhaps the two will even develop a romantic relationship given the kiss they share in the trailer. Although a prequel to Army of the Dead, it doesn’t like zombies will factor very much at all into the film's plot and will instead function solely as a heist movie. This will give Schweighöfer and Emmanuel great opportunities to shine in the lead roles. With Army of Thieves coming this Fall, more will likely be revealed about the two’s relationship in the lead-up to the film’s release.
