Splitgate, the portal-centric first-person shooter, is so popular in its beta phase that the full release has been delayed to August 2021. Developer 1047 Games rolled out the first beta on Steam in March 2019; Splitgate's console beta went live earlier this month, with a full release penciled in for July 27. As noted above, the free-to-play title's explosive popularity has drastically changed previously laid plans.

The portal shooter received the cross-play, cross-gen treatment on July 13, a move that saw the player-base surge dramatically. In the two weeks since the PlayStation and Xbox beta touched down, more than two million players have joined the fray online. 1047 Games, understandably, wasn't prepared for such an influx of new users. A Twitter post from the development team's Splitgate account on July 22 divulged that its multiplayer servers could only handle approximately 65,536 concurrent players at any given time, thus explaining the ongoing connection issues. While 1047 Games works to remedy the troubles, a few notable changes are in the works.

A tweet from Splitgate's Twitter page reveals 1047 Games has received $10 million in funding that allows for the expansion of the development crew and server capacity. According to GameSpot, the extra funding came courtesy of Human Capital, a venture capital firm whose support will go a long way in strengthening Splitgate's current online infrastructure. The launch of the free-to-play shooter's 1.0 release has, consequently, been pushed to an unspecified date in August, though 1047 Games will continue supporting the open beta. Pieces of content previously slated to launch alongside the full release remain on track for a July 27 rollout. Said content includes an FOV slider for consoles, three additional maps, extra customization options, and mouse and keyboard support.

Though the server issues caused more than a fair few hiccups, this seems as though it will work out in 1047 Games' favor. The $10 million investment from Human Capital should especially prove instrumental in the growth of both the studio and its ambitious online shooter.

Created by longtime Halo fans, Splitgate is being touted as a "Halo meet Portal"-like experience. Its stunning arenas range from underground missile bases to gladiator stadiums, all bolstered by a portal mechanic that allows players to deftly navigate the environment and strategically face off against opponents.
