Nintendo of Europe has confirmed that new content will be added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons later this year. The company asked for patience and also thanked players for their continued support. It's unknown when the new content will be added or what it will contain.

New Horizons was released last year to acclaim from both critics and fans. The game was updated fairly regularly for the first few months, adding new features, characters, and events. Currently, it is the second best-selling Nintendo Switch title and was the best-selling game of 2020. After celebrating its first anniversary, the game began cycling through past events. The repetition and drought in content left many players unsatisfied. Some even went so far as to claim the game was abandoned by Nintendo.

Thankfully that is not the case, as the Nintendo of Europe Twitter account confirmed new content will be arriving in 2021. This content is currently in development. The tweet specified that more information will be released in the future. It closed with Nintendo thanking players for being patient and continuing to support New Horizons.

While some fans are undoubtedly excited about the new content, others believe it's too little, too late. Some even call the announcement nothing more than "bait." There will be trolls and some disappointed fans regardless, but the skepticism is not without merit. The reveal of additional content is vague. It's also a reply to another announcement, this time about the returning fireworks festivals. Still, New Horizons' predecessor New Leaf was given the "Welcome Amiibo" update rather suddenly and years after launch, making this announcement far less shocking.

What the new content will be is anyone's guess, but there are some safer assumptions. the fan-favorite Brewster and his coffee shop, The Roost, has been a staple of the series for quite some time, but he makes no appearance in New Horizons. His return would be greatly appreciated by long-time fans. Other missing characters include Katrina, Gracie, Resseti, and Kap'n. Any of these characters could return to fandom approval. Even a minor NPC like Blanca or Katie would be a celebrated comeback.

There are some more obvious picks for what the new content will be, but that's not a guarantee it'll be correct. Nintendo is a company that consistently surprises its player base. Hopefully, fans won't have to wait too long to learn what new content will be added to New Horizons. The year is already halfway through – if Nintendo intends to keep its promise of a 2021 release, the new additions will be coming sooner rather than later.
