Percy Jackson actress Alexandra Daddario reflects on the pressure surrounding the movie to become the next Harry Potter. In 2010, Daddario notched her biggest film role yet when she played Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, opposite Logan Lerman in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. At the time, there was a lot of buzz surrounding The Lightning Thief, as it was the first adaptation of author Rick Riordan's hit Percy Jackson series. The movie was directed by Chris Columbus, who also helmed the first two Harry Potter movies. As a result, many pegged Percy Jackson as the next major book-to-movie franchise.

Unfortunately, that was not meant to be. The Lightning Thief was something of a modest success at the box office, grossing $226.4 million worldwide. However, it failed to win over fans of the books and especially ran afoul of Riordan himself, who to this day has refused to watch it. Fox went forward with a sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, in 2013, and Daddario and Logan both returned as the leads. That installment fared worse, and there have been no additional movies since. Instead, Disney+ is hard at work adapting Percy Jackson into a streaming series with Riordan onboard.

While promoting her new HBO series The White Lotus with Collider, Daddario looked back on her experience with the Percy Jackson movies. One might assume the actress was feeling the pressure to pull off a new Harry Potter, but that wasn't quite the case. Daddario was aware of the impact Harry Potter had and the similarities it held with Percy Jackson, but in terms of pressure, she didn't quite feel it. She explained:

“I loved Harry Potter and I knew that it was structurally similar, but to me, at that time, when I was cast in it I was 22. To me it was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m gonna go do a movie!’ Now I’m older and I’ve been in enough films and gone through a bunch of press cycles and all of that stuff, so I have more of a sense of how important this is or that is, or if a movie’s gonna work or not work. But at the time, it was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m in a movie.’ So I didn’t think about the pressure of anything. I didn’t really understand what was gonna happen from that movie or the concept of tracking or budgets or first weekend box office. That was all stuff I learned through it, so any pressure I felt was just a pressure to do a good job. I just wanted to do a good job and to have fun, and that was the pressure that I was putting on myself. I wasn’t thinking about, ‘Is this too similar to Harry Potter,’ or, ‘Is this gonna work,’ or anything like that.”

Fans of the Percy Jackson books will be quick to say it's more than a Harry Potter wannabe, but it's not hard to see how there were a certain amount of expectations surrounding The Lightning Thief. That Daddario wasn't quite aware of it is impressive, and it's good to know she didn't let that affect her work on the movie. Percy Jackson was a learning experience for her, and now she can apply what she learned there to other projects.

The Percy Jackson movies are still a bit of a sore subject for fans of Riordan's books, but there's a great deal of excitement surrounding the Disney+ series. Since being announced last year, there haven't been many major updates. In April, Riordan revealed they were starting the casting process for the part of Percy, but that has been it so far. As the series is looking to cast book-accurate actors (as in, kids who are 12 years old), one has to hope the new Percy Jackson cast won't deal with any kind of Harry Potter-level pressure. It might be better if they approach it like Daddario did: Just do a good job, and don't worry about anything else.
