The Suicide Squad director, James Gunn, claims that the next DC movie he works on would be something fans would not expect. It almost seems like the options are endless after seeing the man tackle projects like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and DC’s The Suicide Squad to critical and audience acclaim. But Gunn seems to thrive on surprising his audience, so his choice is sure to be something completely different than what other directors might take in his position.

Gunn rose to prominence as a screenwriter back in the early 2000s by writing the scripts for both Scooby-Doo and Scooby Doo-2: Monsters Unleashed, as well as the script for Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake. His directorial debut was the hit horror-film, Slither, followed by the superhero satire, Super. He truly became a household name for his work writing and directing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, followed by its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

During Screen Rant’s recent interview with Gunn, he teased that the next DC movie he worked on would be something completely unexpected. The comment came up after he was asked if there were any other corners of the DC universe he would like to explore, to which he promptly said “Yes.” When asked for hints for what that would be, he replied with, "No. It's not what anybody would expect, I'll tell you that much."

But what would be unexpected for Gunn? After hits like Guardians of the Galaxy and the hype for The Suicide Squad, one might think his specialty is movies about the underdog teams of DC and Marvel. Therefore, the logical choice would be a film about another group of misfit heroes. So, with him teasing something out of the ordinary, perhaps the next DC project he would want to tackle would be something smaller and more intimate. It could maybe be an origin story for a single hero or a film focused on a lone villain.

It goes without saying that Gunn’s contribution to Marvel by way of The Guardians of the Galaxy has earned him a great reputation. The Suicide Squad has yet to even be released, and most are assuming his magic touch will bring that franchise up to a whole new level. So, it stands to reason that DC would be wise to give Gunn his pick of characters/franchises for his next project. Hopefully, fans will not have to wait too long to find out what it is going to be.
