Borderlands star Édgar Ramírez opens up about Eli Roth's film adaptation of the Gearbox franchise and its faithfulness to the game's tone. Ramírez is part of the ensemble cast for the film that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett and Janina Gavankar. Development on the film first began in 2015 but found true traction when Roth signed on to helm last year with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin penning the script.

Despite being an adaptation and sharing the same name, Borderlands will be set in a universe separate from the Gearbox video game franchise. The film will center on infamous outlaw Lilith as she returns to her home planet of Pandora to the find the missing daughter of powerful businessman, Atlas. Putting together a team of mercenaries, including Hart's Roland, Greenblatt's Tiny Tina, Munteanu's Krieg, Curtis' Tannis and Black's Claptrap, Lilith finds that the fate of the universe could very well be in her hands.

Ramírez recently sat down with CinemaBlend to discuss his role in Disney's adaptation of Jungle Cruise, with the conversation turning to his work on Borderlands. Though noting he wasn't much of a gamer prior to the film, the star confirmed he became familiar with the source material after signing on and praised the efforts taken to properly capture the unique tone of the games. See what Ramirez had to say below:

"In the end, games, movies, it’s all about storytelling. And the most iconic games, such as Borderlands, is the storytelling and the tone of the games what have made them so special. So now I know the game. I didn’t know it before. And the tone is spectacular. I mean it’s so dark and so witty and so whimsical as well. It’s so in on the joke and kind of like impudent. There’s a 'I don’t give a damn' attitude to the game, and that’s what we rescued and put into the movie so I’m very excited for the fans of the game to see it and see how respectful we were to the tone of the game."

Though a story is certainly just as important when it comes to a video game adaptation, nailing the source material's tone is even more pertinent to properly bring a game to life on screen. Recent efforts such as Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog may have seen a mixed reception for their plots but critics and fans were largely favorable in their responses to their tonal translations of their games. Given the world of Borderlands is more iconic for its unique brand of humor and style, the key to the film's success was always going to lie in its adaptation of the games' tone.

While Mazin may be more popular in dramatic fare of late after his Emmy-winning Chernobyl miniseries, Roth's stint as director of Borderlands always felt like the right fit to nail the source material's tone. Having delivered plenty of darker humor in his horror hits Cabin Fever and successfully captured the Grindhouse style with his "Thanksgiving" fake trailer, Roth certainly felt like one of the few directors who could bring Gearbox's off-kilter world to life on screen in a faithful way and Ramírez's comments should raise fan anticipation for the project. Only time will tell if it marks another win for video game film adaptations when it arrives sometime next year.
